As dreams go, it's not exactly a big one, but it was mine: Our 2017 Silverado was about sixteen months away from being paid off, so I'd planned to buy myself a Genesis G90 this summer while I could still get a new one with a V8.
Hoping you'll notice or have the time or inclination to respond to a comment on this old post.
What signs did the torque converter give you before giving up the ghost? I have a '16 Burban (my kids call it The Great White Beast) with the 5.3 and 6L80. I bought it used with 30k miles. Now at 70k and I have read all the message board horror stories about the metal shavings running through the tranny. Even my wife has noticed it doesn't drive as well as it used to - and she's not particularly observant about these things.
Any words of wisdom before I run my credit card balance up another $3k?
My understanding is that the 6L80 likes regular fluid changes. The transmission is quite reliable otherwise (definitely so compared to the 4L60E and 8L90), but old ATF in the torque converter is a weak spot with 6 ratios to choose from and the torque converter locking up in most/all gears. The 8L90 has the same problem but worse with two extra gears to shift through.
Wow. Thanks! I had forgotten I posted this question.
I did an ATF drain and fill at just past 60k miles. I'm now a bit over 80k, and I haven't had any real problems. I've also been using the Range Technology module (disables the AFM) for the entire time I've owned it.
I've had a number of problems with the vehicle in the four years I've owned it, but so far the powertrain has not been one of them. Fingers crossed.
Disabling AFM from new seems like the best choice. For those that couldn't buy new, there's always the GenIV L9H 6.2s. That's what I'm looking for right now.
