My first car was a 1997 Hyundai Accent and I found it to be cheerful and chipper over the years and tens of thousands of miles I put on it. It was a red 4-door and it didn't have cruise either. I used to wedge my foot between the pedal and the firewall on the long 8-hour drives between school and home. I did think the generation in your article was better styled, though.
