Around Thanksgiving, my dad got my mom a new (ish) car: a 2022 Macan S. She previously had a ruby red XC60, but the Porsch came in as a trade in at the local BMW dealer, and the owner, Dave, is a buddy of his. So he brought it home for the weekend, Mom decided she liked it, and the deal was done.
Just a few weeks later, your author was haunting the Davenport Target, and lo and behold: a Matchbox Macan, in burnt orange.
I immediately decided I needed to do a mini version for her upcoming birthday. And assumed, foolishly as it turned out, that it would be a cinch.
It wasn’t. Oh, the initial coat looked good, and I was so sure there would be no problems. One weekend I put on a 3rd coat, walked out of the garage and assumed all was well.
It wasn’t. Next time I looked the paint had completely, totally wrinkled up. I sanded it down, put on a new coat and crossed my fingers.
All for naught. It creased, wrinkled and totally fricked up too.
Resulting in my sanding, sanding, SANDING the fricking snot out of it and starting over with a bare metal body.
And it worked! Taking no more chances, I accepted the paint job as fine enough and went to work detailing.
Despite a couple tense moments where the matte black trim went AWOL and I had to get paint thinner and re-do, the rest of the project was pretty calm.
The final product pleased me, and Mom liked it too. Job done!
Absolute madman. Painting an orange car white is nuts for starters But is it a model of historic significance? Oh not at all. It is a mockery of a once proud name with a racing heritage so closely associated with Le Mans that back when their poseur-mobiles still had keys they were on the left side of the steering wheel. Well at least it wasn't too hard. Wrong again my friend! You were sanding between coats. Plural. For moms, anything. Love it.
Hey Tom, I always enjoy these little projects... I'm a 1/18 collector, nothing particularly extensive... mostly just famous race cars. I have Siffert's 917, Miles' GT40, Gurney's TA Challenger, a 956, 935, C.7R, etc, etc...
Anyway, like I commented in Jack's other post, I'm currently in Japan on vacation. A couple of days ago, I stopped by the Sparks retail store in Ginza, Tokyo... scale model heaven!! Lots of different scales, but I bought a 1/18 Mazda 787B...
