I apologize... I'm very excited about the possibility of selling stuff I own and getting money!

And YES I remember that!

Correction. Two and a half weeks is not last minute. For most men, that's almost ridiculously early.

Only time I ever ghosted a woman I was dating was due to a concern that she might suicide if our breakup got messy. She was rather emotionally fragile. Spent a couple months trying unsuccessfully to come up with a way to break things off. In the end I changed positions in the company to one where I was working 60+ hours a week and being sent across country regularly.

Not my finest hour, but it did work out for everybody in the end. She got her life together a bit and started dating a well paid Intel engineer who had never been on a date before. He put her on a pedestal and they were married within 18 months. I escaped a relationship from a mental case who was ballooning at a rate of 5-10lbs a month without anybody blaming me for a suicide. Win-win.

Im a raging insomniac, and used to smoke a shitload of the synthetic weed, blasting two or three carts in a week. Killed my motivation, and when a client’s fundraiser went 15k under estimate (notably, this was under a contract where I got 10% of whatever we raised), I really started to limit it. It also can lead to the development of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder. I will do it on very rare occasions now, and won’t say I don’t do it (because there’s at least one person here who can point blank prove otherwise and call me out) but I’m careful.

I’m not sure that it’s capitalism or politics per se, it’s more that we’ve completely warped and debased our culture and no one wants to acknowledge that.

It’s funny because everyone loves to bash Adam Smith and the invisible hand, but his original book was called The Theory of Moral Sentiments, and the Wealth of Nations makes a hell of a lot more sense if you start there.

Makes me miss my first Political Economy course in college where the profs made us read all of this in its original form (plus Marx and the rest) rather than just modern commentary. May be a fun January project to pull the syllabus and make that my reading list

Jack Baruth's avatar

Yetis are ALL China.

Pelican is USA for SOME things.

If you’re going to buy a Chinese rotocooler, let me suggest these guys:

Small veteran owned business located in our Northern WI vacation town. Their waterproof gun cases are excellent as well. Solid guys even if everything is Chinamade.

Keith's avatar

ORCA coolers are but it doesn’t look like their mugs are

Thomas Brick's avatar

I remember hearing on a podcast (either daily wire stuff or crowder or something)... they were unable to source American made mugs. Who knows how long they tried, but it strikes me as a tough product to make here.

That said, I'd love one.

Terry Murray's avatar

I believe Tervis are.

AK47isthetool's avatar

Fascinating. So I initially thought I hit the jackpot because their insulated plastic mugs are made in the USA and have a lifetime warranty. Their metal travel mugs however are Hecho in Chine, come with a whole host of restrictions about what type of substances can touch them (presumably to keep the heavy metals from leeching out of the pot tin), and only a two year warranty.

If any of our esteemed colleagues here knows, I would love to hear why it is possible to make a plastic mug in the US but not a metal one. I imagine that historically the Chinese spies and their American lickspittles didn't care to destroy the US plastics industry because you can't make gun barrels out of plastic.

Speed's avatar

What if you went custom? There's no earthly way a stainless or titanium mug would be hard to make.

Jack Baruth's avatar

Take a look at Snow Peak. It's Japanese, at least.

Harry's avatar

https://www.snowpeak.com/collections/coffee-tea/products/kanpai-bottle-350ml

"The Japanese-designed Kanpai Bottle 350 is made of vacuum-sealed, double-wall stainless steel."

I am wary of the "Japanese-designed" phrasing.

Jack Baruth's avatar

Hmm. Everything I have from them is made in Japan, but I don't have any of the double wall stuff.

JasonS's avatar

Speaking of Japanese steel, Nippon just purchased U.S. Steel. American companies just don't want to invest into American Steel. I have no idea unless its simply that labor is too expensive or the technologies here making steel are too expensive.

Keith's avatar

Only plastic tervis tumblers are MIUSA. My research has turned up no stainless steel mugs MIUSA.

Terry Murray's avatar

I wasn’t sure. That’s why I used the I believe caveat. Thanks for the research.

Don Curton's avatar

I used my plastic Tervis today, first time in a long time. Had it for something like 20 years, still works great. That said, it was never a daily use item like my yeti (hack - spit) coffee mug.

That said, all my yeti stuff was free - work promos and such. Never spent a penny on their stuff.

Harry's avatar

I went to Outdoor Retailer this spring with the goal of finding Made in USA insulated drinkware. Baring that, made somewhere not China insulated drinkware.

It was a wasted trip.

James R's avatar

Nueske’s, Oscar’s Smokehouse and Chukar cherries are a few US companies making some good food that I’ve shipped to family and friends as gifts around this time of the year

JasonS's avatar

I've heard and read that stainless steel vacuum type tumblers and mugs are virtually waaaay to expensive to actually make here.

For example, Tervis plastic tumblers are made here, but their SS version are made in China.

AK47isthetool's avatar

Because of environmental laws or labor laws or what?

JasonS's avatar

I have no idea. Most stainless steel for these cups is already rolled in China. I would guess both environmental and labor are primary factors.

John Van Stry's avatar

I have given Tactile Turn pens to people as Christmas gifts. So far, no complaints! :-)

Speed's avatar

I'm wondering if I ought to get one of those over a Rotring mechanical pencil.

John Van Stry's avatar

I would say it depends on why your getting it. If it's for drafting, I'd go with the Rotring. If it's just for use as a pencil? I'd go with the Tactile Turn. I gave out a pen and pencil set last year and they loved it.

Speed's avatar

Noted, thanks for the info.

Tripp's avatar

I love my rotring pencils, except for how fragile the lead guidance sleeve (I think it's called) is. I don't know how many of those I've bent from even short drops. Maybe I'll have to try the Tactile Turn, it doesn't look as fragile. Of course, it's significantly more expensive.

Speed's avatar

You think it's possible to unbend one of those sleeves with a drift punch or are they toast as soon as you drop them?

Tripp's avatar

I typically have been successful unbending them just by eye on a table edge, but if you don't get it pretty perfectly centered, the lead will crack every time you start to write.

Tripp's avatar

Everyone acted a fool this year. There are several people whose main Christmas gift will be me not slapping the shit out of them: my relative who got arrested for firing a gun in a crowded bar over a wannabe gang rivalry...my friend who left a half-assembled, 800-lb CNC machine in my garage for far too long...the mechanic who used zip ties to put my inner front CV boots on, instead of metal clamps...

Desert Does It, makes a product called: seat jackers.

Had to buy it on name alone. Made in USA is a bonus.

Also Chapman tools.

AK47isthetool's avatar

Seat jackers look amazing. The angle of the seats in Japanese cars drives me nuts. Have you installed them yet?

Jack Baruth's avatar

I'm curious as well.

Ken's avatar

Will let you know. Bought them on a black Friday deal, and they came in this week. They are well machined with nice hardware - but admittedly the same could probably be achieved with a few trips to the hardware store for bolts and heavy washers. However, Desert Does It has engineered specific to each vehicle.

4Runner and Tacoma owner love them (my father being one of them). I bought a set for my Ford Explorer - will be putting in (hopefully) this weekend.

CLN's avatar

I’ve stacked washers, etc, to get the seat base tipped back so I don’t feel like I’m being dumped into the steering wheel. Haven’t tried these, are they adjustable?

Ken's avatar

They are. I think there's a minimum of two setting, but it might be four. (I still have yet to install.)

Ken's avatar

Installed over the weekend. Super easy (about 15 min). Glad I went with them vs washers; their machined block provides a good solid base for the seat rails.

I was hemming and hawing over the value of these things, but I think it's there. At $70 they ain't cheap. However, their build quality, ease of install, and made in USA makes up for that.

In terms of improving comfort - for me it's helped. I'm 6' 1'' and I like to sit with the seat at its lowest height setting. So close to the floor; the front is unable to tilt as high as it does when the seat is raised. (Because tilting up the front, lowers the back of the seat, and on the floor, it can't lower anymore.)

With the Seat Jackers I have more height in the front, while setting the seat lower. Is it life changing? No. But it's noticeable and IMO worth buying / installing.

Speed's avatar

Seat jackers? Those exist?

and you thought cellphones were the biggest reason behind distracted driving

My wife is a big fan of lodge cast iron pans

Mozzie's avatar

I've been using a hand me down lodge cast iron pan a lot more lately. It's one of those "created centuries ago, but still works wonderfully" items which makes me wonder why the limited-life non-stick pans dwarf a cast iron (in terms of brands and models) on the rack of any store. The silicone handle covers are a nice addition to a lodge, which some of the new ones come with.

Dave T's avatar

Non-stick for sure, also cost. We prefer to avoid the non-stick since eventually a lot of that Teflon coating gets consumed by people who use them!

Ronnie Schreiber's avatar

It shouldn't be a health problem, probably less of an issue than ingesting aluminum. The reason why Teflon is non-stick is because it's an incredibly stable and non-reactive compound. Flourine is highly reactive but it's so electronegative that when bonded to other elements or molecules those bonds are very , very strong.

Edit: I should add that because fluropolymers are so non-reactive that it was a bit of a challenge to create non-stick coatings that stuck to the substrate. Apparently it's done with electrostatic powder coating.

Dave T's avatar

Fair point! I’m also trying to keep my ingested aluminum intake low along with my required dosage of microplastics

Speed's avatar

Thanks for being the voice of reason.

burgersandbeer's avatar

Have you tried cleaning eggs from a cast iron skillet? That is why non-stick is popular.

Use a non-stick for only eggs and pancakes, maybe pasta, and the coating lasts longer. Consider it disposable anyway.

Use lodge cast iron for everything else. It will last forever as long as someone doesn't try to clean it by letting it soak.

Drunkonunleaded's avatar

Counterpoint: I have an old cast iron with a smooth finish (unlike a modern Lodge pan). You can fry eggs in that thing without issue.

Mozzie's avatar

Is it polished? I know it's an option but haven't tried myself. I can't recall the company name, but there is a high end cast iron made in usa which is sold with a polished finish.

-Nate's avatar

My ex wife ruined then tossed out my full set of antique cast iron pans, I'd been gathering them since the 1960's .

She wonders why I don't miss her .

-Nate

Mozzie's avatar

Make eggs in the lodge often and have no issues with cleaning. The disposable aspect made me switch to stainless steel. Not the same, but works well enough.

Sam's avatar

I've found if you cook your bacon first and leave the fat in the pan the eggs come out great, the key is lots of lubrication and a hot pan.

Somehow I get pushed cast iron fandom pages on the social media and it would seem a lot of the people interested enough in posting to those groups take a flap disk to their Lodge pans to smooth out the finish.

TL's avatar

My camping gear contains some 1920s era cast iron pans. Every few years they get some moisture on them in the off season and require cleaning with a flap disk on a angle grinder before the first camp trip. Doing dishes man style.

CLN's avatar

That is the ONLY way to make eggs...

Brian's avatar

I'm also a fan of Lodge cast iron pans. Those things will last a lifetime.

Henry C.'s avatar

Vintage Griswold >>> Lodge.

Auto-No-X's avatar

Lodge has started moving some manufacturing overseas. Check the label. That said, I'm not a fan of the rough cooking surface on the Lodges. You really need a smooth machined surface and that costs extra.

For high-end machined cast iron there is Field Company out of NY (they use a lighter weight alloy) and Smithey Ironware (absolutely gorgeous).

Dave T's avatar

Noted, passing this onto my wife, thanks!

Don Curton's avatar

I wanted a ceramic coated cast iron dutch oven. 99% of them are made in China, even Lodge. They have a kinda mea culpa desperation thing on their website about how they really researched it and all the quality control they put in place. Anyway, ended up getting it anyway, cooks wonderfully. But yeah, China. I think all their basic cast iron is still USA though.

Jeff R's avatar

Lodge's website has a big NEW badge on USA Enamel Dutch Ovens. One one size, naturally in Red, White, or Blue.

We have several Made in France enameled cast iron pieces from Staub, and they're excellent. The "Everything Pan" (3.5qt 12" braiser with glass lid) lives on our stove and is the default pan for everything that fits. Pretty much the only time I reach for something else is boiling pasta, soup, and braises big enough to need the dutch oven.

I have a Spyderco Native 5 that I’m very, very fond of (but I don’t have very large hands, if I did, I’d probably go with a different Spyderco).

I’ve had an Enso silicone ring as a wedding band for six or seven years which is worn down from daily wear. It still looks nice and they’ll replace it if it snaps but I didn’t want to wait until then so I ordered myself a couple more rings and one for the wife that she really likes.

I've owned two Spydercos; the spoon clips have a nasty habit of snagging bird netting and I've temporarily misplaced my knife on every single install I've done locally. I usually find it within an hour or two, but one time I thought it was gone for good so I ordered a Manix 2 which I did not like and returned (although a buddy tried to convince me to hold onto it so I could dual wield). Day later I found the Native up in the net. If I ever lose it for good I'll probably track down another just like it. Love the thumb hole and how flat it sits in my pocket.
