I would appreciate any prayers for my father-in-law and my wife's family as he passed away this week leaving behind six children, eight grandchildren, and his own wife.

MotoGP at a chilly Silverstone: Quartararo continues his stellar qualifying run with a third pole position in a row. Alex Marquez from second, Bagnaia finishes ahead of Marc Marquez for third in qualifying, leaving Marc way down in fourth on the grid.

From the jump in the cold for the sprint M Marquez takes position up front only to bobble a turn and be relegated to a second place finish behind Alex. Alex kept it tidy, Quartararo couldn't keep pace and dropped to seventh. Bagnaia fell to sixth. Digi had a late sprint charge to take third for a Ducati sprint lockout on the podium.

The race would prove far more interesting with mechanical mayhem and critical crashes. Alex Marquez crashed in L1T1 and appeared to have scuttled an opportunity to put more points pain on Marc. Marc would also crash from the race with a long slide bullying his way through some foam blocks. The Ducatis generally looked out of sorts. Then Aleix Espargo and Morbidelli came together and the racing gods smiled upon the Marquez brothers. Oil on the track: red flags and a race restart with original grid positions.

At the restart the Maqurz brothers were timid as they waited for heat in the front tires to avoid additional crashes. The soft front shod Yamahas of Quartararo and Miller; Hondas of Zarco, Mir, and Marini; and Aprilia of Bez made a serious charge. Quartararo absolutely cleared out and had a four and a half second lead with 8 laps to go. Then heartbreak as his ride height device stuck on and left the bike unable to handle appropriately. Bez then had a big gap over Zarco, and likewise to M Marquez who ad worked from 6th up to 4th, now miraculously (for him) a podium spot. Alex finished down in sixth. What of Bagnaia? All the ducatis on the medium front had issues early on and Bagnaia would be the third Ducati to lose the front. He would DNF and put himself further in the hole for the championship. M Marquez had a second moment where he briefly lost the front as well so it was widespread on the medium fronts it seems.

Still, Yamaha looks like a threat again, Honda is even looking alright. Aprilia victory from Bez was good news showing that it's a competent bike. KTM is at sea with nothing doing it seems.

Rookies: Ogura out with knee injury, Aldeguer's hot streak broken with the poor Ducati performance, and Chantra? DFL again.

MotoAmerica will be at Road America this weekend.

Totally random ORT tech support question: anyone here have Kitchenaid oven repair experience? This is for a gas range/two drawer electric oven combo with the red ring on the handle. Had the convection fan replaced and serviced a half year or so ago. Recently the big compartment failed to reach full temp. getting stuck on pre-heat. The broiler works, and the small drawer works fine. Is this a DIY repair, or do I have to call a pro?

Go on Perplexity and pose your question. I just did so and it gives a bunch of possibilities and some links. I’m sure some of the answers won’t be helpful, but one might be. You can also ask if a specific repair it suggests can be done by the homeowner. It’s worth a shot.

The other option would be to go to an old school appliance repair parts shop where the pros buy their parts. Give the parts counter guys your model number and ask about it. I once fixed an expensive refrigerator by installing a new circuit board that a parts guy suggested. These guys have seen it all, like a good parts guy at a car dealership. Or they may know a local independent repair guy who could help. There’s usually a bulletin board in these places where the local guys pin their business cards.

Check with repairclinic.com. If the main heating element at least preheats, my guess is a problem with the temperature sensor or thermostat in the main box. The broiler element is likely not temperature controlled.

We're also a bit spoiled in the fact that you can travel 30 miles away in the Detroit area, as Repair Clinic is from me, and it only takes about a half hour compared to a lot of major cities where traffic can be a lot worse.

I once had a business meeting on Long Island, about 30 miles from where I was staying in Staten Island and it took me about 90 minutes to get there and about 2 hours to get back.

My experience at Waterford was something of a mixed bag, I immediately had an issue during my annual tech Friday night when my brake lights wouldn't work, but some local racers who liked my car immediately jumped in and helped me run a jump wire from the brake pedal switch. After that, I had to wait till Saturday morning to finish the tech inspection, though my qualifying race wasn't till after lunch. I've never been to Waterford, so I was dog slow in qualifying and started the Saturday race 15th out of about 26 cars, and dead last in my class. I had something of a horsepower advantage on Shevel, but during qualifying he quickly found the fast way around the track while I spent 20 minutes trying to pull my head out of my ass and drive.

The afternoon race was a much better performance, and while I couldn't catch Jon, I had pace to stay on the rear bumper of the Porsche 944 who was running second in class, before he tangled with a Miata in turn 1 and ended up in the gravel. I also realized during that race that I'd have to periodically choose strange racing lines around the track in order to keep my water temps in check, Waterford is relatively low speed and tight, and with two or three cars stacked up ahead of you, the radiator just isn't getting any airflow.

Before the qualifying race on Sunday, I found my left rear wheel hub was loose in such a way as to suggest a ruined wheel bearing, but later determined that the axle nut had simply come loose. With Shevel on his way to Watkins Glen, I was the fastest qualifier in my class and the afternoon race was mine to win or lose. That race ended up being fairly chaotic compared to what I had seen during the rest of the weekend, with multiple cars shooting off into the weeds, and ultimately a black flag after a Miata visited the hilltop turn tire wall on its roof. I really pushed the car in terms of gambling with water temp (though oil temperatures were fine, which is the more critical factor on a rotary) and had some good battles with the small bore cars from other classes in the race group, as the other two EP cars never caught up to make a claim for 1st. I won my class, and more importantly the guy who landed on his roof walked away unscathed. By the end of the weekend I really enjoyed the flow of the track, though it certainly doesn't deliver excitement in the way that Mid Ohio or Nelson Ledges serves by the ton.

I watched MDG's in car footage between race groups, and thought it was asinine that the officials would side against her, I think my words to her were something along the lines of, "fuck those old pricks AND the horses they rode in on."

It was a joy to meet Wyatt and drunkonunleaded in the paddock, and to discuss the finer points of grassroots drifting and getting piss drunk in Detroit respectively. The friend I usually bring along to help crew for me at races was busy last weekend, but my friend Greg was in town from Atlanta, and though he probably doesn't know the difference between a spark plug and a wheel bearing, he came along anyway. He does, however, know his way around a camera, and got some great photos from the racetrack, so if anyone is interested once he's done editing I'll post a link here in the near future.

Goddamn it, that is so depressing to hear, I had always had a passing interest and dreams of B-Spec but to hear Frank Schwartz being a complete asshole more or less ruins that for me. It seemed like he was always a respected old fart who raced hard and had pioneered a few other race classes in the 90s as the man took multiple titles with his (cheating!) R56 in B-Spec. Thanks for the reality check.

1-I also love a parade - again - as long as it’s held in Monaco. For all the whining, hand-wringing, and gnashing of teeth among the F1 media and casual fans, Monaco is not in need of a fix. Comfortably more than 70 million people watch a typical F1 race, and the figure is certainly higher for a marquee European Grand Prix held over a holiday weekend in the US (and UK).

Much hot air was expended over the “failure” of the unique tire regulation put in place for Monaco. Let’s game out what might happen over 10 race events: Likely 3 “snoozers,” 3 somewhat “spicy” races, and 3 shocking events (in which an early tire gambler ends up winning). And then 1 remaining race in which it rains heavily and a 1996 outcome is possible. This year’s race was mildly spicy, but things could have been very, very different if it had rained Saturday (putting the cars out of pace order) OR Sunday (uncertainty).

F1 has never been “hotter,” as Trump would say. Liberty just cut deals with Disney and PepsiCo, hot on the heels of the Lego, ahem, parade in advance of the Miami race.

2-I was delighted to see Cheating Roger Penske’s team have a dreadful day at The Speedway on Sunday. Scotty Mac managed to crash on the warmup lap; Cheatgarden’s bid to win a legitimate 500 ended up in smoke; Will Power had an anonymous race on a hiding to nowhere.

With his victory in the 500 - and this year’s championship all but assured - Alex Palou should have his management banging down Graeme Lowdon’s door to secure a Cadillac seat in F1 next year.

3-BMW’s recent “CS” cars have been well-reviewed. As I recall offhand, BOTH the M5 CS and M2 CS triumphed in Evo’s “eCOTY” events in recent years. BMW still has enough brand value, particularly with the CS badge, to move all of the cars, even at the elevated price (the forebears were also breathtakingly expensive for what they represented on paper).

The mandatory ZF 8 speed doesn’t bother me terribly. By all accounts it’s an excellent transmission that is essentially as good as a conventional DCT ‘box. Aston Martin uses the same configuration for the new Vantage and Vanquish models.

larson has done quite a bit but my issue was his insistence that he could beat verstappen (which he later walked back) which is why wrecking the car on three separate occasions is noteworthy so if he hadnt said anything i doubt it would be of much interest

Larson is extremely talented, but I cannot help but root against him because of how often he makes very boneheaded moves that ruin other guys’ days and equipment. This seems to happen more rather than less frequently as he gets older, as opposed to guys like Hamlin, both brothers Busch, Chastain and others who have matured on track as they moved into their 30’s.

I’ve been watching F1 since the early 80s and never liked a race at Monaco but I still keep tuning in out of fanboyism and because it’s nice to see race cars near in the real world around actual stuff.

The 500 was much more interesting, and then watching the MotoGP Sprint and then the race proper was better than anything on four wheels earlier in the day.

What I am surprised they have not done is a year end go-kart race, to be broadcast on YouTube with full F1TV-level production quality.

Heats among the following:

-All 22* (*Cadillac) drivers

-All reserve drivers

-All team principals

-1 “ringer” per team otherwise (any non current driver employee; so a retired driver could conceivably participate)

-Select commentators

Spec karts (obviously) on a compelling kart track built at Yas Marina; FP1, FP2, FP3, Quali, Grand Prix; team radio, etc.

And allow, say, PepsiCo to sponsor it and feature them heavily.

I fell asleep for half the Monaco race while I had it on. Gave up at lap 50. Decided I DGAF who won, lost, went over the guardrail into the marina. I imagine that there were a few more than just me. I watched every FPs and Q. But not the whole race.

F1TV Pro got my money, so they most likely don't care, but that race is nothing but qualifying sets the points scored.

I'd suggest they run the track backyards next year for variety.

Good for the citizens of Tonawanda! I was over in NY State in the village of Lewiston where I pick up my car parts at the UPS store, before crossing back into our glorious northern socialist utopia.

Lewiston is like an alternate reality for me. Everyone was friendly, offering greetings as I walked around. I was even hailed by the local mailman. It was like finding myself in an early sixties TV show. I didn't want to leave.

I'm nearby Tonawanda. It's a great little Buffalo suburb, but the demographic aging of western NY has not escaped it.

I'm no union guy, but the GM Tonawanda POWERTRAIN* plant is more reasonably managed and productive than most GM facilities. Although, my former boss is now a Ford Guy after getting shafted on contract work post GM bankruptcy.

* The new "Propulsion" name is a sin.

Not that I would condone such a thing, but you need to be safe. If some should happen to bump her they should deal with instant consequences regardless of how long the officials take.

the M2 CS has been much ballyhooed on the forums with people having deposits down for over two YEARS when the car was merely a sperm in daddy SLPs ballsack, so to speak. the manual transmission (or lack thereof) will NOT be what kills the sales, if they are killed at all - by all accounts, every single one will be sold north of 100k USD with CCBs in launch velvet blue (why you would spec this car in any other color is beyond me).

the CS' biggest problem? the coming M2 xdrive. thats right folks, every douchebag you know with an M4/M3 comp will soon have a new toy in the driveway. its going to be the same formula as the current crop of "comp" models (note the "comp" moniker will soon be gone - the official name will be the "M2 M-xDrive" which is really fucking dumb), 523 hp (same tune as CS), xdrive, automatic only, and crucially, starting around 82k (fully optioned will likely touch 100k).

by all accounts, CS products fare well in reviews, but the resale is so-so - M5 CS fetches circa sticker, the M3 CS, not so much. my guess is that the M2 CS will likely fare somewhere in the middle - more desirable as a used car than a base M2, but ultimately secondhand buyers will opt for the sub 12 second 1/4 times of the xDrive (which can easily touch low 11s with some mild tuning).

i dont think the venn diagram of NISMO intenders and CS intenders has a huge overlap. but the M2 CS biggest threat comes from within the walls of SLP itself.

i agree the IS cars are easily the best looking. i havent driven an IS500 but someone i trust has and he noted its not really an M3 competitor. its an F sport with a V8 dropped in. if you're OK with what that entails, great, but dont expect a 75% scale GS F - its soft, a little roll-y, a lot squat and dive-y, and typical japanese ergos (doesnt work for me at my size)

Velvet blue. A very comely shade to say the least. I once conversed interestedly with the selling owner of one of very few E46 M3s specified in Individual Velvet Blue. Reputedly 1 of 8 (I did not check), this one had cloth seats, manual trans, in fact manual everything. No nav. An unusually specced example, to be sure.

Sadly, the car--located in Mass--was beaten half to death, I want to say 160 or 180k miles, and the rocklike massachusetts road salt had started eating the car. The paint was so good that it almost covered up this fact but even the most cursory "rough runner" back-of-napkin math suggested 20 stacks (at the time, immaculate, 50k mile 2006 e46 money) to put it halfway right and it would still have been rusted to death.

Forgive me for such exegesis, but: Would that they would build a 523 horse velvet blue e46. That would be the one to have.

Ah, but it likely died a warriors death with six digits on the odo and a 2 in front. Many people with happy memories trashing it as designed… and of course the E46 was the highest production M car of all time.

Go drive a current gen M2. Its about 470 to the wheels in manual form, its got the suspension tuning magic that defined classic M cars as beat in class, its not small but its not massive. It’s still a compromise (steering has no feel, styling is eh, it’s heavy) but at least it doesn’t ride like an oxcart like the F87s did. The G87 is spiritually as close to the E46 as you’re likely going to get.

It’s an interesting conundrum. Something that I wanted to be so amazing has sadly been a disappointment.

I have a 24 M2 manual transmission. It’s porky. I always prefer manuals but I’ve gotten two M240 with the automatic and sadly they are significantly better.

I’m getting rid of the M2 and getting 2016 235. Sadly, the steering and weight is so much better. Also, the interior with the screens are significantly better even though 8 years older!! Trading back and somehow trading up?

"in matters of taste the customer is always right". i find the F-chassis cars to ride poorly, are unable to put power down in RWD form without significant modification, the interiors are already aging poorly, and the 58 series motors sound better and should be more reliable than the 55 series counterparts. in return, you get a more "raw" car that is defined by more NVH and not much more steering feedback IMHO. i hope you make the right move for you, but ive got a lot of seat time in an F87C and i wouldn't trade for the nicest one.

Question as someone who has not driven an F-anything 2, 3 or 4 car. Does the assessment "I find the F-chassis cars to ride poorly, are unable to put power down in RWD form without significant modification" also apply to the larger F82/83 M4 coupe/vert?

it absolutely does. the F chassis cars across the board suffer from, in my opinion, poor ride quality and axle hop (not an opinion) under hard launch. moving down from the 20 inch wheels of the F comp models should help but ultimately its just a harsher car. some people say they like the more "raw" feeling of the F cars. i just found them to be uncomfortable. you never forget what you are driving... if that makes you excited get one, if that makes you wince, look at the G chassis.

Id agree with you that the F chassis cars are some of the brands worst offerings, but I'd counter that if you're really looking for an involved driving experience, you should be looking at an e chassis car.

If you just want silly acceleration, get a BEV

If you’re looking to drive it with any regularity, you better have deep pockets and some backup cars. Driving it every Sunday to church and back, sure, E chassis. Doing any amount of real driving…. F or G.

As a 19 year old computer technician I got dispatched to Esskay Meats in Baltimore. Home of Oriole franks and other fine extruded meats.

That experience pretty much cured me of hot dogs. I've probably eaten three in the 39 years since.

I think it has something to do with the Natives NOT putting all the animal scraps into a giant rendering tank and cooking / mixing it until pretty much anything could be disappeared in there, then adding a variety of preservatives, lots of sodium and chemical coloring / flavoring. This before pushing it into a synthetic casing.

How long ago was the study that found 2% of hot dogs contain human DNA? Its not hard to see how that happens. Just ask 'old nine fingers" over there at the plant.

The funny thing about Hebrew National's slogan is that many, if not most, orthodox Jews don't think their kosher certification is particularly reliable. The local all-kosher grocery store doesn't even carry Hebrew National.

My personal favorites are A&H Uncured Beef hot dogs. I'm not particularly concerned with the fact that they have no artificial nitrates or nitrites, they just taste good. Jack's Gourmet deli stuff is also very good. I'm having one of their sweet Italian sausages for lunch right now as a matter of fact.

the factory 5 speed ratios look pretty good and parts are cheap enough that an oem engine could make maybe 145 or 150 whp while still being streetable sounds like itd be enough especially if you had motorcycle carbs on it or something (fiat twincam head?) for that intake noise and throttle response

I know that aerodynamics is the last thing on the minds of the designers of those things, but you’re not gonna be able to cut the mustard in a race like that by not thinking outside the bu..BOX! Seems more likely that was already in GM's capital plan and they accelerated it based on the absolute disaster the 6.2L has become.

It might all be moot though - if this tax plan goes through as is, the $5T additional debt will mean most of us won't be buying anything but our own bonds for a while.

Though my understanding is that Tonawanda is a plant with a good rep (unlike, say, Ford's Chicago plant) and GM has already sunk $300B in the area.

Add in the NY state tax credits (just for staying put!) and cheap hydro power, and it was probably just cheaper or cost-neutral.

Getting DJT to pretend he did it was probably just some good political icing on a cake that was already baking.

Really depends on the state politics, I think. Gov. Hochul is way underwater and keeping the plant seemed like a pretty easy lay up. I've dealt with different Gov offices on similar things (but in the academic sector) and the speed is usually dependent on Gov needs/carrots/sticks.
