It is no coincidence that the "bad cops" and the "killer cops" are almost always in high-crime areas. I'm not aware of any "killer cops" in the entire history of my township or neighborhood. What would they do? Whom would they kill? Nobody DOES anything!
What I've learned in my travels through the justice system is that, in general:
* Police and other LE people, ****including the attorneys and judges****, are frequently low-value thugs whom you don't want near you at any time;
* They are shining examples of humanity compared to the people they often have to police.
If only there was more oversight on them so that the corruption ALSO inherent to the position (hello civil asset forfeiture, for example, or cops committing crimes getting “prosecuted” by their friends. Or at a much lower stakes, speed traps even) could be curtailed.
I grew up in a town with **zero** police force, interestingly enough.
Though as a white male have been hassled by police the town over for several very silly reasons to include “smelling like a grape game cigar” (I don’t and never really have smoked weed), and getting stopped on suspicion of DUI (I didn’t drink that night) because I picked up my friend from a bar and turned around in an empty McDonalds parking lot.
Cops have a very tough job that I would never want to do. We should DEMAND better of all of them too. The culture of the job largely prevents reform from happening in this country.
If anything the amount of body cam footage now available makes me on the whole, though not exclusively, more sympathetic to LEOs with regard to those notoriously troublesome subgroups.

My wife grew up in LA county during those years, and the smog was horrible. It was only when the smog-less older vehicles finally aged out that you could regularly see the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountain ranges. It was always nice to see the often snow capped mountains while I lived there from 2000-2020.
I was in LA for a day last year. I drove straight from the car rental at LAX out to Cypress in Orange County, then to Pico-Robertson in LA to get some kosher food and then back to LAX. Orange County looked like a picture postcard promoting southern California. Los Angeles was dystopian. People living in old Winnebagos within blocks of the airport. Way more homeless folks pushing shopping carts up La Cienega than I've ever seen in Detroit. Armed security guards in every retail establishment of any size, also something I rarely see around Detroit.
a lot of that can be blamed on the state's K-shaped economy and housing prices. California has the world's 7th largest economy, yet here in the Bay Area we have literally had teachers living in Winnebagos because they can't afford homes.
The area I stayed at in LA in December was alternately wealthy and dilapidated. Not a great combination. The broken and heaving cracked sidewalks were a horrendous sign of no civic pride. The city just doesn’t care and it was obvious.

My wife is LA born and raised, so I lived there for 20 years. I loved my time there.

3. Entrepreneurial spirit. There’s a self-starter culture that transcends ethnicity…I could name friends of all ethnicities that own successful businesses.
The one party politics grated on me, and Covid finally caused me to leave. I took my then five-year-old son to the playground and they had police tape around it. Then Newsome forbade schools to open until Fall 2021. I decided I didn’t want to raise my kids in the state anymore.
I lived in a high-rise in downtown LA 30 years ago. Used to walk from my place to the Biltmore for cocktails and cigars and the occasional dinner In Bernards. On my last visit in April, downtown makes Tijuana look like paradise.

I would like to think someone would have sounded the alarm. How could something like this be put past every single person who would object? As I understand it, the mail-in balloting process in California allows ANYONE to submit ANY NUMBER of ballots at once, as long as they are legitimate original ballots. There doesn't need to be any corruption inside the ballot building.
Just the fact that anyone can vote, be they citizen or foreign in California is antithetical to what citizenship means in this country, the enemy’s are inside the gates.
You can’t like go somewhere and get blank ballots and take them away.
The ballots are mailed to everyone before the election, and you either mail them in (in the provided envelope), or drop them off in designated ballot boxes.
Or you go to a polling place and you can fill out a ballot there and submit it.
To “harvest” ballots, someone would have to go door to door and get people to give them their ballot. While theoretically possible it would be a huge logistical challenge. And, it would assume the Democratic party is actually competent enough to pull off such a massive thing without any evidence leaking out, and there is plenty of data proving that party is not competent.
Don't know if LA is like here, but Washington State's King County Elections allows you to log in with a name, address, and birthday to print a ballot on a computer.
And given that public PDF images of voter initiatives have the required information *and* a signature, you could theoretically.... do the needful.

Not sure how they do it there. I was a Republican poll worker in Chicago. At the end of the day, they’d take the thumb drives from the voting machines and stick them into some device which magically sent the results back to some central location. We loaded the paper ballots onto a van to be delivered to a place where they were stored. No one knew the final resting place and how a ballot could ever be located again.
In many places I believe all mail in ballots are supposed to have signatures compared and other security procedures in place. I believe I remember this was not done in many places in 2020.
And I also seem to remember boxes being delivered late at night to counting areas.

Something I don't get: in Ohio, I can login online to see that my vote was counted but I cannot see how the vote was cast. Why can't I confirm that my choices were recorded correctly?
If republicans ever want to win an election or make and headway in California they are going to have to learn how to play the election game the way democrats do by ballot harvesting and doing whatever they have to do in order to get ballots filled out the way they want and then getting them into drop boxes and into the counting rooms.

It is willful ignorance from the media. I grew up in St. Claire County Illinois and it was run by a Democrat machine that rivaled Chicago. The county is mostly rural with two towns of around 45000 people; Belleville, 100% white at the time, and East St. Louis, 100% black at the time. The Democrats had split the county into 2 voting districts with ESL being one district and the rest of the county the other. ESL was always the last to report their votes and always managed to produce just enough votes to put the Democrats over the line. Everyone knew what was going on. I knew several Democrat politicians that readily admitted they paid people to vote in ESL. There was a Pulitzer prize waiting for a reporter to break that story but somehow they never did. It's not quite as bad now that Belleville is integrated and ESL's population has dropped so low that even the Democrats can't manufacture enough votes to push all of the Democrats over the line. But it's still run by Democrats and they still have shenanigans going on and the media is still willfully blind.

They always get huge tax exemptions and so contribute nothing to the tax base. They don't add any beneficial jobs to the economy -- a few dozen illegals during construction and a dozen H1Bs after construction. They obligate power companies to permanently upgrade power infrastructure at huge cost to locals. They are hugely noisy and yet somehow bypass zoning to get built next to residential neighborhoods.

A data center of any size will involve thousands of skilled tradesmen to build it -- enough so that Meta is starting their own trade schools, allowing people to enroll for free, and guaranteeing them a job when they finish. There's a data center going up in my sisters new homeland (Cheyenne, WY) and the biggest concern there is the man-camp they're constructing to house the workers. There are projected to be 8000 of them.
It's not all sweetness and light, but please don't call 8000 skilled trades jobs, "a few dozen illegals".

I don't want to beat this drum, sir -- but I call them "skilled trades jobs" because that is exactly what they are. The sheer number of journeyman electricians and sheet-metal workers it will take to put these things in is something almost nobody truly comprehends. We don't have enough of either, probably by half. The "scale of the folly" is astronomical.
There will be "transient worker" jobs on the sites for sure -- laborers constitute about half a normal jobsite. But these things are not "normal jobsites". They are more akin to a power-plant job in the amount of electricians, sheetmetal workers, and pipefitters they will employ during construction.
Their ongoing operation will chew up dozens (at least, and probably hundreds) of on-site tradesmen -- at least as many as would be required to keep a factory running. The scale of the cooling requirements for these things rival that of a nuclear plant.
We need to be having the discussion about whether this is what we want to be doing, just on its own -- but a realistic accounting of the workers it's going to take to build and keep them running should not be discounted.

That reminds me of the dark stores thing in Michigan: big box retailers argued successfully to the, oh, I think it was the MTT, that they should be taxed as though the land was empty because their sites are so specialized there's no market other than themselves for that specific type of store. Meijer came into Marquette promising all sorts of things and immediately dark stored themselves. You know who DIDN'T dark store themselves? Walmart. They sat down with Marquette Township officials and worked out a deal to contribute fairly to the tax base that satisfied both sides. I was shocked to learn that, I'd have thought for sure Walmart would go the dark store route.
Our solar farms in the southern end of the county are exempt thanks to MI's alternate energy exemptions. The MCL is written in such a way as to allow local units to determine certain exemptions and abatements themselves, so it will be up to local officials (and in the boonies you're dealing with arrogant, gamma-ass hicks in charge of everything) to stand up to the big tech companies if they don't want the data centers.
Meta built one here next to the Toyota plant. They have their own solar farm.

One big turn-off is that they've become a gold rush for shady land developers who shush the local government and any neighbors who'll bite with a non-disclosure agreement, seek tax abatement, and make a plan to stuff the maximum number of cooling towers and natural gas "backup" generators on the property. Then they go looking for the power and water (power is hard, water just takes a promise of some $$ tomorrow). They've been building a couple of data centers north of where I live for a while now. Started before the AI thing. Texas Instruments also decided to expand, rather than close, a major installation of theirs in the same area. As this is out in 'semi-country' and in an area no one really cared about (and not IN any town) everyone was cool with it. The TI place at least has it's own power, and pretty much everything else (there are a few fabs there and I think they're actually building some more, rather than shut the old ones down).
Right now, everything in that aspect is being done with everyone's approval. Hopefully that won't change.
The current outrage here is that they want to build one next to the Nashville Zoo. The economics are unclear to me of putting it there but the outrage seems to be centered on…well it’s a data center.
That would be a fair point. You likely don’t know but they give an annual festival of lights for over a month where there’s all sorts of light displays at night. I personally would not attend because I think it’s bad for the animals and a money grab by the zoo.
Antonelli is turning in a legendary performance every weekend. The best part about this kid is that he's bright and he loves F1 and its history and pangeantry: have you ever seen him in some of those goofy F1 games they make the drivers do? Horn Dog cannot get far enough away from the sport for me, he's a cocky Alfred E Newman. James Vowles is Toto 2.0, which is why I keep hoping for the best at Williams.

Though a part of me is still tempted to buy an older, pre-monoshock, Low Rider. There are days I still miss my sportster, which was just a nice GPB kinda bike. The Low Rider was really just the 'grown up' version with a bigger motor, a bit more power and a bit more range.
I was wondering if you had a preference. If air cooled mattered, then maybe a 1200 cc kit Sportster would be more interesting than a Revolution Sportster despite the old bike being much slower.
You don't ride harley's for the speed, though they are fast enough. I just miss my old sportster and have been thinking of replacing it. As for fast? I got a ZZR1200 which I've had over 160 more than a few times (though probably never again - getting old). That bike is still very fast.

It's hard to take any of it seriously. The media lied about Zimmerman. The media lied about Rittenhouse. And the protests in Ferguson were absolutely NOT correct in that case.

I grew up in a town with **zero** police force, interestingly enough.
Though as a white male have been hassled by police the town over for several very silly reasons to include “smelling like a grape game cigar” (I don’t and never really have smoked weed), and getting stopped on suspicion of DUI (I didn’t drink that night) because I picked up my friend from a bar and turned around in an empty McDonalds parking lot.
Cops have a very tough job that I would never want to do. We should DEMAND better of all of them too. The culture of the job largely prevents reform from happening in this country.

You can spend 3.5 hours driving eight miles in LA, if things aren't going your way. Mind you I also recall being able to see the entrance ramp I'd used to get on I-95 South in my rear view mirror an hour and forty-five minutes after I'd left my place in Alexandria.

My wife grew up in LA county during those years, and the smog was horrible. It was only when the smog-less older vehicles finally aged out that you could regularly see the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountain ranges. It was always nice to see the often snow capped mountains while I lived there from 2000-2020.
I was in LA for a day last year. I drove straight from the car rental at LAX out to Cypress in Orange County, then to Pico-Robertson in LA to get some kosher food and then back to LAX. Orange County looked like a picture postcard promoting southern California. Los Angeles was dystopian. People living in old Winnebagos within blocks of the airport. Way more homeless folks pushing shopping carts up La Cienega than I've ever seen in Detroit. Armed security guards in every retail establishment of any size, also something I rarely see around Detroit.

The area I stayed at in LA in December was alternately wealthy and dilapidated. Not a great combination. The broken and heaving cracked sidewalks were a horrendous sign of no civic pride. The city just doesn’t care and it was obvious.

My wife is LA born and raised, so I lived there for 20 years. I loved my time there.

2. Roads. Angeles crest and the canyons in LA county are empty on weekdays. And NEVER patrolled!
3. Entrepreneurial spirit. There’s a self-starter culture that transcends ethnicity…I could name friends of all ethnicities that own successful businesses.
The one party politics grated on me, and Covid finally caused me to leave. I took my then five-year-old son to the playground and they had police tape around it. Then Newsome forbade schools to open until Fall 2021. I decided I didn’t want to raise my kids in the state anymore.
I lived in a high-rise in downtown LA 30 years ago. Used to walk from my place to the Biltmore for cocktails and cigars and the occasional dinner In Bernards. On my last visit in April, downtown makes Tijuana look like paradise.

As I understand it, the mail-in balloting process in California allows ANYONE to submit ANY NUMBER of ballots at once, as long as they are legitimate original ballots. There doesn't need to be any corruption inside the ballot building.
Just the fact that anyone can vote, be they citizen or foreign in California is antithetical to what citizenship means in this country, the enemy’s are inside the gates.
And you can get paid for collecting ballots. Not paid for a single ballot. But picking up multiples is fine.

To “harvest” ballots, someone would have to go door to door and get people to give them their ballot. While theoretically possible it would be a huge logistical challenge. And, it would assume the Democratic party is actually competent enough to pull off such a massive thing without any evidence leaking out, and there is plenty of data proving that party is not competent.

Not sure how they do it there. I was a Republican poll worker in Chicago. At the end of the day, they’d take the thumb drives from the voting machines and stick them into some device which magically sent the results back to some central location. We loaded the paper ballots onto a van to be delivered to a place where they were stored. No one knew the final resting place and how a ballot could ever be located again.

It is willful ignorance from the media. I grew up in St. Claire County Illinois and it was run by a Democrat machine that rivaled Chicago. The county is mostly rural with two towns of around 45000 people; Belleville, 100% white at the time, and East St. Louis, 100% black at the time. The Democrats had split the county into 2 voting districts with ESL being one district and the rest of the county the other. ESL was always the last to report their votes and always managed to produce just enough votes to put the Democrats over the line. Everyone knew what was going on. I knew several Democrat politicians that readily admitted they paid people to vote in ESL. There was a Pulitzer prize waiting for a reporter to break that story but somehow they never did. It's not quite as bad now that Belleville is integrated and ESL's population has dropped so low that even the Democrats can't manufacture enough votes to push all of the Democrats over the line. But it's still run by Democrats and they still have shenanigans going on and the media is still willfully blind.
But there has never been voting fraud in this country! Except that one time a republican did it in North Carolina!

A data center of any size will involve thousands of skilled tradesmen to build it -- enough so that Meta is starting their own trade schools, allowing people to enroll for free, and guaranteeing them a job when they finish. There's a data center going up in my sisters new homeland (Cheyenne, WY) and the biggest concern there is the man-camp they're constructing to house the workers. There are projected to be 8000 of them.
It's not all sweetness and light, but please don't call 8000 skilled trades jobs, "a few dozen illegals".

I don't want to beat this drum, sir -- but I call them "skilled trades jobs" because that is exactly what they are. The sheer number of journeyman electricians and sheet-metal workers it will take to put these things in is something almost nobody truly comprehends. We don't have enough of either, probably by half. The "scale of the folly" is astronomical.
There will be "transient worker" jobs on the sites for sure -- laborers constitute about half a normal jobsite. But these things are not "normal jobsites". They are more akin to a power-plant job in the amount of electricians, sheetmetal workers, and pipefitters they will employ during construction.
Their ongoing operation will chew up dozens (at least, and probably hundreds) of on-site tradesmen -- at least as many as would be required to keep a factory running. The scale of the cooling requirements for these things rival that of a nuclear plant.
We need to be having the discussion about whether this is what we want to be doing, just on its own -- but a realistic accounting of the workers it's going to take to build and keep them running should not be discounted.

Our solar farms in the southern end of the county are exempt thanks to MI's alternate energy exemptions. The MCL is written in such a way as to allow local units to determine certain exemptions and abatements themselves, so it will be up to local officials (and in the boonies you're dealing with arrogant, gamma-ass hicks in charge of everything) to stand up to the big tech companies if they don't want the data centers.

One big turn-off is that they've become a gold rush for shady land developers who shush the local government and any neighbors who'll bite with a non-disclosure agreement, seek tax abatement, and make a plan to stuff the maximum number of cooling towers and natural gas "backup" generators on the property. Then they go looking for the power and water (power is hard, water just takes a promise of some $$ tomorrow). If nothing leaks out before the town council or county commission approves the final development agreement, the bulldozing has already occurred.
They've been building a couple of data centers north of where I live for a while now. Started before the AI thing. Texas Instruments also decided to expand, rather than close, a major installation of theirs in the same area. As this is out in 'semi-country' and in an area no one really cared about (and not IN any town) everyone was cool with it. The TI place at least has it's own power, and pretty much everything else (there are a few fabs there and I think they're actually building some more, rather than shut the old ones down).
Right now, everything in that aspect is being done with everyone's approval. Hopefully that won't change.
The current outrage here is that they want to build one next to the Nashville Zoo. The economics are unclear to me of putting it there but the outrage seems to be centered on…well it’s a data center.

That would be a fair point. You likely don’t know but they give an annual festival of lights for over a month where there’s all sorts of light displays at night. I personally would not attend because I think it’s bad for the animals and a money grab by the zoo.

You don't ride harley's for the speed, though they are fast enough. I just miss my old sportster and have been thinking of replacing it. As for fast? I got a ZZR1200 which I've had over 160 more than a few times (though probably never again - getting old). That bike is still very fast.

Having only detached interest in the mayoral race stemming from too much time spent on X mostly watching body cam footage of black women getting arrested, what utterly flummoxes me is the absolute vitriol Pratt drew. Like if you want to say he’s dumb or inexperienced or unqualified, sure, I get that kind of, but he came across as earnest in wanting to change things. But the number of “Now go fuck off Pratt” posts I’ve seen from semi-reasonable people on the ‘gram is interesting and disturbing. I mean I guess if you’re just knee jerk anti anyone to the right of Hillary, this is how you respond? But otherwise, what did he do or say that deserves outright hatred from people who aren’t obviously in on the scam in LA? Boggles the mind. There are some politicians I hate, but there are also plenty on the other side who I just have casual disagreement with. Hell, Zohran doesn’t really offend me, I don’t agree with him, but whatever, he seems relatively sincere in his beliefs.

In national politics, sure. But it doesn’t get much more local than this. And you can’t even really say “well it’s the elites behind the gates of the fancy neighborhoods” because the Palisades was the fancy neighborhood. The squalor is all over LA. Money doesn’t really insulate you from it outside of the very tip top of Beverly Hills or whatever. The kind of people who are reacting that I see are well off but certainly not “helicopter to the mansion over the poors” well off. Maybe I just underestimate the amount of virtue signaling is needed to maintain status in a place like that, I dunno.
