Amen to the racist part. And just don‘t think the native Indians were all peacefully smoking pipes all day long. According to the seminal work (book) about the history of Texas I‘m going through, some tribes murdered and slaughtered other tribes fully, decimated them or pushed them out of their territory. Sure, they were pushed out by the whites eventually, but they weren’t really any better… Not all of them, just like not all whites are bad people.

About being racist: did you hear about BMW revoking a lease offer to a newly appointed AfD minister? Supposedly the North Korean family drove BMWs (hearsay, I don‘t know for sure) and probably other despots drove them, too. But now they think a democratically chosen candidate from Germany‘s biggest (!) party can‘t have a BMW. What utter morons!

Ice Age's avatar

Read Francis Parkman. "Redskin savages" is no exaggeration.

Speed's avatar

yeah there was a reason we called them that. obviously kind of conflict is extremely common in canada given that the natives (hate the word but whatever they dont matter) recieve tens of billions yearly and have an outsized amount of sway in national affairs relative to their importance. its disgusting. they got their day of "truth and reconciliation" but they wont let anyone dig up the graves or investigate the matter with a third party. theyll try to bash you over the head with white guilt fairlytales nonstop though.

"About being racist: did you hear about BMW revoking a lease offer to a newly appointed AfD minister?"

Pinning it for this.

Nothing says "Piss on the little people" more than this. The citizens of Saxony have elected someone, in large part because they are sick unto death of being exploited.

I was talking to a German autowriter about this and I suggested that perhaps Genesis would like to give this fellow a state car. Better yet, LEXUS.

jmcq747's avatar

It’s a complete and utter disgrace for BMW, I hope they let go of whomever was in charge of this BS. I really like BMW, but this makes me want to sell my X5, as I’m quite fed up with leftist wokeness as well. Also, what’s happening in Germany is going to happen here in Switzerland, eventually. Maybe not as bad, but even 50% of that nonsense is too much. I’d love to see Genesis, Lexus or even Tesla step in…

2-I have figured out what the Jaguar Type 01 really is: A poor man’s Cadillac Celestiq!

Ataraxis's avatar

The Jaguar Type 01 is really an updated Lincoln Mark V.

An excellent article from The Autopian from someone not named Adrian. This is brilliant. https://www.theautopian.com/the-new-type-01-doesnt-look-like-a-jaguar-but-it-could-make-a-great-lincoln-mark-v-revival/

Lincoln should cut a deal with Jaguar and build this. The Lincoln design updates fix everything that’s wrong with the Type 01.

Rick T.'s avatar

Well at least there’s a fighting chance you won’t go blind looking at it. So there’s that. Which is nice.

MD Streeter's avatar

At least the rendering doesn't have a fake vinyl roof.

Ataraxis's avatar

If the Mark V rendering had a vinyl roof, it would still look better than the Jaguar.

MD Streeter's avatar

That is also true.

I'm not sure why they forced 4 doors onto a design that was introduced as a 2-door coupe; the rear doors are bordering on comedy when you open them, a huge piece of sheet steel covering a mouse hole you have to climb through.

Ataraxis's avatar

The difficult entry to the front and back of the Type 01 can be seen in the Harry’s Garage video. Harry didn’t understand why they did that.

What’s come out after the production car was revealed is that the 4 door design was really the first design, long before the 2 door concept was released. Very weird.

Sherman McCoy's avatar

Yes.

The original design was the production car, essentially. Then they designed the concept car as a derivative of the original idea.

Steve Ward's avatar

The Lincoln version looks MUCH better.

Is there room in the fenders for hidden guns?

Ataraxis's avatar

Well it’s got really wide door sills to hide the drugs.

Here’s the famous scene from The French Connection. “That car’s dirty!”

Now I’m going to be watching French Connection clips the rest of the day. My Dad took me to see it in the theater when I was 11 and I’ve wanted a Mark III ever since. I’ll never forget that the theater showed cartoons before the movie!

He was, on a check!

(For the record, MDG paid his coaching fee, which was an absolute bargain by any standards even after taking him to the world-famous OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE.)

Sherman McCoy's avatar

My local Outback “Steakhouse” went out of business. As did the Longhorn, come to think of it.

But there IS a Cava across the street from the former Outback!

Ataraxis's avatar

Looks like Atlanta is losing the people needed to keep the place running.

When the makers with dirty hands leave, that’s never a good sign.

Sherman McCoy's avatar

The Outback was in a good location; it’s now a much more expensive Mexican place (the Outback lease ended and the landlord went with a different concept). There is a steakhouse across the street that sells $87 filets and $98 cornbread and caviar appetizers.

The Longhorn was a few miles away but is near a major MARTA station. Every restaurant in the area has gone out of business or changes hands / concepts frequently EXCEPT Chipotle.

Congrats to all on the racing successes.

Love her rocking the IWC in the race car.

Casio released the USA version of their new, all blacked out, G-Shock square with the negative MIP display and I grabbed one before it sold out.

I gotta say, for $180, this thing is incredible.

This is a great detailed breakdown of the “positive” display version:

Here is a look at the all black version with the “negative” display that I bought:

Jeff R's avatar

All the machinations to keep MDG from winning sound like what happened with Suellio Almeida (sim racing kid turned real racer) in the Radical Cup in 2024. His championship rival brought his IMSA GTD champ son and a WEC/GT2 Europe driver to the final weekend to try and stop him. Suellio still won, drove a pretty unsucessful Michelin Pilot Challenge season in TCR, and now seems to fly around the middle east coaching rich dudes full time.

Jack Baruth's avatar

They were playing so much hardball against her I considered just renting a SRF and putting their driver on the LifeFlight Saturday morning to settle it by default. Even if I got maximum points for deliberate injury, I would STILL be behind MDG. The guy who rammed another driver in the pitlane earlier this year then knocked the driver's elderly father out with a single punch has fewer points than MDG.

Jeff R's avatar

I'll never understand going to all this trouble and giving up your integrity for a $2 trophy in club racing. I get it to win an F1 or Nascar chapionship or something with millions of dollars on the line but this? Makes no sense to me.

I remain genuinely surprised at the number of people in Midwest amateur racing who hate my wife and daughter. Somehow it doesn't extend to me, even though I race five times as hard as they do. The fellow driving the white-and-blue Miata that I used as a mobile pinball bumper in the above race video came up and congratulated me on the move.

It's so expensive and difficult to race a whole amateur season now that I can understand why people take it seriously, but I wish we all had some perspective about it.

"The Chinese have been around just as long as the French have been. Their arc didn’t bend the same way."

I'd argue that our arc isn't as different as you would like...I distinctly remember the passage of an animal crush video prohibition...in (thanks internet) 2010. The last state to outlaw dog fighting did so just 50 years ago; Louisiana only banned cock fighting in 2008.

But we're also a bit of GDP per capita ahead of them; concern for children and animals is a luxury.

Jack Baruth's avatar

"But we're also a bit of GDP per capita ahead of them; concern for children and animals is a luxury."

This is true. And while I despise dog fighting and would happily sterilize any dogfighting area via 155mm shells, there is a small moral difference between dog fighting and torturing a cat over three days. The purpose of dog fighting is to have your dog win a fight. The purpose of cat torture is... well, it is beyond me.

The UP should secede. I would like to see a once every 50 years state secession amendment where every 50 years a state can divide itself in two.

Lots of obvious problems to this, but more benefits.

Call it The Pursuit of Happiness Amendment.

Drunkonunleaded's avatar

If they can force a constitutional convention ballot measure every 10 years or whatever, they can have a succession ballot measure.

Our state rep has revived an effort to break a cluster of suburbs from Wayne County. With the revocation of the regional transit opt-out, some $65M of our tax dollars is going into a transit system few of us want.

I’ve considered relocation, I’m just not sure where. The only thing keeping us here is familiarity and the quality of healthcare.

MD Streeter's avatar

I could probably get you a job with Marquette County. You'd have to like snow and six months of darkness, though.

Ataraxis's avatar

One of the biggest surprises of moving to a county of only 120k people is the excellent medical care. Turns out that having a bunch of old people here who are medical cash cows attracts a bunch of great docs. Plus with the lower cost of living and real estate the docs want to live here.

I had excellent medical care in the wealthy Illinois county I lived in, which had 1mm more people than my county in NC, and the care here is the same or better. A non urban hospital that is not full of urban problems makes for a happy staff.

Losing familiarity is one of the hardest parts about moving. Plus if you move to a lower density area you are just not going to have the amenities you depend on or like. Moving to a place like I did is just not for everyone.

MD Streeter's avatar

We'd probably REALLY get left off of maps if that happened.

Steve Ward's avatar

It has been brought up every decade or so since at least the '60's (I can remember it back that far having grown up in MI). The biggest problem is the UP gets more in state spending than they send south in tax dollars.

A while back there was a semi-serious proposal to break up CA into 6 states. The Sacramento political tong had apolpexy.

MD Streeter's avatar

Compared to Grand Rapids-Ann Arbor-Detroit, the UP generates basically 0 revenue for the state. Of course, only about 300,000 of 10 million Michiganders live up here.

When I witness someone attacking Christopher Columbus, I point out that the first people Columbus encountered upon reaching the new world were the gentle Taino, who lived on an island where they were regularly raided by the Kalinago, who abducted their women and ate their men. Christopher Columbus was the best thing that ever happened to many of the people who were occupying the new world when he arrived. It is worth examining what is behind efforts to pervert history to the point that some people have been fooled into hating the people who made their lives possible.

Liam Lawson had another good race and is currently sitting at fourth in the Aramco Power Rankings for the season. He'd be third, but Lewis Hamilton gets three DEI points added to his score every race.

Jack Baruth's avatar

"Liam Lawson had another good race and is currently sitting at fourth in the Aramco Power Rankings for the season."

As previously noted, either Lindblad is a complete shitbird OR they are both underdriving the car :) I also admire Liam's fitness. He was one of the fellows who looked unflustered by Singaporean heat; the two who were the most obviously comfortable were Leclerc, and of course, Max.

One of the reasons the Aztecs were able to be defeated was because the surrounding tribes were tired of the mass sacrifices. Cortez's "army" consisted of less than 1,000 spaniards and and over 80,000 indigenous people.

On the smoking of tobacco: I started smoking three minutes after the first time I got laid and have no intention of giving it up. However, the smoking of cigarettes, or Js, is a nasty habit. Cigars are one thing; unfiltered Camels(the only cigarette worth smoking short of Nat Shermans) are quite another, and smoking weed is just fuckin' lame. It was cool when it was illegal and you had to know a guy; those days are behind us in most of the country.

On the Baruth racing dynasty: congratulations to the Danger Girls miniature and full-sized. I'll re-up at Trackday level next year just to hear about the races.

On human cultures and their respective moral standings: one should always support one's own culture above all others. If doing so seems wrong or immoral, you have subscribed to the wrong culture and should pick one you feel justified in supporting to the fullest. At any rate, Columbus was an asshole, but compared to those against whom he struggled he was clearly in the right, as were the Spanish conquistadors.

Drunkonunleaded's avatar

As with anything else, smoking became uncool once it became mainstream.

Your friend used to show up to a party with Mexican ditch weed he bought from a gas station. It was named something retarded like cat shit cookies. You smoked it out of a Mountain Dew bottle with a gum wrapper and got a headache.

Now every corner is littered with eye rape dispensaries that somehow have even more retarded names, Chinese LEDs, and a consistent line of weirdos. The owner is always some balding mid-40s Chaldean guy who spends his time hitting on 18 year old Latinas and talking about how he’s buying a Lambo.

Legalization was a mistake.

Steve Ward's avatar

"The owner is always some balding mid-40s Chaldean guy who spends his time hitting on 18 year old Latinas and talking about how he’s buying a Lambo." and just how would you know this? :)

Drunkonunleaded's avatar

Mainly because I’ve had to escort my grandfather to the dispensary to buy edibles because after 20 years hurricane wasn’t effectively treating his arthritis and he was for some reason too intimidated to go in alone.

I switched his doctor when I moved him down here and now he’s in a proper pain management program.

But also because on every up north trip, SOMEONE has felt the need to drop into a dispo. They’re all more or less the same. My favorite is the one just north of Flint that’s in a converted Denny’s.

Is there any way to clip the wings of these old guy race stewards by using the rules of their organization against them?

I realize it’s the Big Government version of the racing world, but still, they need to made aware that their behavior is unacceptable.

Jack Baruth's avatar

"Is there any way to clip the wings of these old guy race stewards by using the rules of their organization against them?"

Here's the problem: we have no Gen Xers who are willing to spend real time and money NOT RACING. I'll probably become a steward when I can't see well enough to race... but at that point, SHOULD I be a steward?

Danger Girl volunteered to become a steward last year. She did six training sessions with Boomer men who tried to feel her up and Boomer women who basically called her a stupid whore. So she was happy when she was removed from the program at the collective Boomer request.

Henry C.'s avatar

Patience. The reaper bats one thousand.

Ataraxis's avatar

It’s so easy to be fair. It’s effort to be unfair.

Feed these MDG episodes into AI and have it cite the steward violations from their own rule book.

Then send a registered legalistic letter to the organization, with the intent being “We see you.” Apparatchiks hate accountability.

The behavior of any organization which constantly put its thumb on the scale really frosts me. I served for 10 years on the Membership Committee of a large federally regulated securities exchange. I regularly approved people I didn’t like, and voted against people I did like, because I followed the rule book. And unlike most people I actually read the rule book.

Since I served as the representative for one of the largest firms on the exchange, I also regularly had to recuse myself from discussions and leave the conference room and go wait in the hall, all to avoid the slightest bit of impropriety.

It would have been so easy to game the system, but my name was attached to my actions. At the end of the day, all you have is your good name.

Fun story. I was once in an elevator at the exchange and heard someone say “I don’t know who this Ataraxis guy is, but if I ever meet him I’m going to give him a piece of my mind!” Extremely satisfying, especially since this was a person I did not like. I was also wearing a trading jacket with my name on it if she had just turned and looked at me. We all had to wear a large ID on our trading jackets for trading floor access.

i think this is sarcasm based on your past commentary on the "disposable" nature of these types of cars. but maybe not, because for $75k and an ECU unlock you can run probably low 10s and really hurt some high dollar feelings, but i suppose an M4 Comp xdrive (note: the comp moniker is officially dead; good riddance) pulled off a BHPH lot for 60k could do the same.
