The “AI is going to kill us all” X post is coordinated propaganda, as expected.

Here is how it went down. A total hit job. Here are the receipts. https://xcancel.com/ParkerThayer/status/2097759699626328575#m

Further proof that everything is an op.

Caveat Emptor.

Eric L.'s avatar

Fascinating! Thanks for sharing this.

Jack Baruth's avatar

I'm in favor of "AI doomer" stuff because it has the potential to slowly prick the bubble rather than let it turbo-2008 the country. It will also result in fewer Superfund sites when most of the processing moves to the desktop.

Ataraxis's avatar

I’m really tired of everything being an op.

It seems like the only big news now that isn’t an op is a weather event.

Scott A's avatar

“Climate change”

Ataraxis's avatar

Touché.

I was going for the small stuff like snowstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes that have nothing to do with the crazy theories of the greens.

Hex168's avatar

Thank you. Your link is entirely convincing that something is, indeed, up. My first reaction is that, when he get to step 4, Democrat involvement, the timing suggests opportunistic behavior, not an integral part of the initial plot. My mind remains open on that, however.

Other possible motivations include 1) scam for non-profit money 2) an attempt to get hands on levers of power, possibly anti-competitively so 3) Jack's Darth Vader coolness factor (also see Herman Kahn).

Ataraxis's avatar

It is kind of frightening that they didn’t make any attempt to hide any of these links that some random guy just found. They didn’t care one bit if people found out if this was an op, simply because by that time the op would have already done its job and been successful, which it was.

Steve Ward's avatar

"Nevertheless, it’s fundamentally a stupid idea because off-road trails are the places in America least likely to have a charging station nearby, and part of being off-road is that you can’t really be exact as to your schedule or timing." Exactly. Which is why I bought a JGC PHEV and not a Rivian, etc. I've been places where I worried that the 400 mile gas range would not be enough to get to the nearest gas station. EV charging station? LOL Can AAA bring a bucket of electrons to you if you run out of charge?

TM's avatar
Sep 9Edited

You can always siphon some. :) Not that I’ve ever siphoned fuel before.

Steve Ward's avatar

Hmmm, someone needs to invent a charge siphon. Drive up to a trail head, connect a cord from your EV to another EV, and suck the charge out of their battery, then drive off all energized. Maybe we can get an AI bot to invent this very useful device.

TM's avatar

Best Beavis and Butthead voice, “eh, eh, he said suck and EV in the same sentence…eh, eh”

Lynn W Gardner's avatar

Steve, well well said, EV off-road vehicles are for posers not for real wilderness adventures.

Ataraxis's avatar

This comment is trail rated.

Drunkonunleaded's avatar

Wes Siler isn’t going to like reading this.

Steve Ward's avatar

Too. Freaking. Bad.

Ataraxis's avatar

Depends on what Mrs Wes thinks of off road EVs.

Scott A's avatar

“Do you like it rough big boy”

Speed's avatar

and an ev is more likely to use those deadly tow hooks too

Wyatt LCB's avatar

and more likely to actually break them

Eric L.'s avatar

To be fair, most off road vehicles are for posers, not for real wilderness adventures. I scratched all down the passenger side of my luxury off-roader, because I am bad at driving and drove through the overhanging brush because I was concerned that putting my 8-year-old HT tires into the rut would lead to a failure. Now I have new tires and a better sense for where that far-off passenger side door is!

But all the fancy lifted 4Runners and GXes and RAM Rebels? Yeah, they're always squeaky clean with no scratches and carefully oiled sidewalls to really show off their oversized KO3s.

A good ceramic coat does seem to provide some protection against the redneck pinstriping. Unless the vegetation is really woody even the worst of it doesn't get into the clear coat. I keep a M18 top handle chainsaw with me because I hate getting turned around by a small downed tree. It makes for an OK hedge trimmer too in a pinch.

Re: the Rivian, if I have to hear one more person glaze the Rivian for off-road prowess when it doesn’t even include a spare fucking tire I’m going to explode. No spare is criminally negligent in a purported “off roader”. The R1T has one I guess but the R1S and R2 are *optional* space savers. Off roader my ass.

Ataraxis's avatar

That’s bad, but are the Rivian tow hooks trail rated?

If not, I’m expecting windshield notes soon.

S2kChris's avatar

Will the notes just be pleading for Rivian drivers to come sleep with Wes’s wife? Because most of them would rather cornhole him. Which might be a feature not a flaw.

Ataraxis's avatar

Leaving his phone number would accomplish both!

Scott A's avatar

His wife and him are both in agreement on that

danio's avatar

I had a coworker leave to go work for Rivian. I'm not sure why someone would leave one corporate job for another that was practically guaranteed to lead to insecurity. I guess he wasn't as stupid as the one that went to Vinfast.

Steve Ward's avatar

I know at least one person who went to Faraday Future. Which come to think of it, I wonder if that vapor company is still somehow flapping around alive on the beach?

According to Google AI, “the company attempts a dramatic pivot from struggling luxury electric vehicles to artificial intelligence and robotics”

Jay B's avatar

It's actually a dude with a flatbed Dodge that shows up with an unmuffled/non emissions controlled genset and you plug into that.

Steve Ward's avatar

Which, IF it generates 220v, will take a full day to give sufficient charge to get back to the nearest EV charge station. But maybe there is a business opportunity here.

When people joke about the DMV I just think, not here in Ohio, but in 1963 on the other hand — all registrations were handled in a one or two month period, cash only. Any you got brand new plates, no stickers yet. Sorry I couldn't read the Hyundai article yesterday....

I’m sitting in the drive through line in my Wrangler with the doors off and I’m 100% squeak free. FWIW.

Speed's avatar

i miss my wrangler for that door off experience

it was garbage

Steve Ward's avatar

There was a fancy Wrangler in the dealer show room here. Something north of $90k (US dollars). Astounding/crazy. Probably will sell to some Navy guy who will finance it over 8 years.

Scott A's avatar

Guy with 90k wrangler and a $20 burrito

“Why cant i afford a house!”

S2kChris's avatar

A $90k Wrangler is almost certainly a V8 (or has all sorts of dealer installed bling). My mid-spec V6 model stickered for $56k and I got it in the mid $40s with no effort other than an email.

Steve Ward's avatar

Yes it was loaded, V8 engine. But still.

Rick T.'s avatar

Curious. What’s the purpose of driving around with the doors off …. With your foot hanging out on the sideboards? I’ve seen a number of kids driving to high school like that and it astounds me the parents let them.

S2kChris's avatar

It’s like a blowjob. There is no point but it’s fun and feels good.

My kid will likely get a Jeep, but she won’t be taking the doors off.

Rick T.'s avatar

I suppose. And just like a blowjob there’s a non zero chance you could unexpectedly lose a body part while you’re enjoying the experience.

S2kChris's avatar

Maybe stop getting your BJs in prison and you won’t have to worry so much.

Scott A's avatar

The point is to not have five daughters!

Rick T.'s avatar

My dear departed FIL had four and no sons. By the time I came sniffing around the youngest with two older ones still at home, he was highly motivated to move the merchandise.

All kidding aside, I lost my father unexpectedly when I was 18 and my FIL was like a father to me. I took his passing very hard.

Jack Baruth's avatar

I have no greater pleasure in my increasingly timid life than riding up next to no-doors Jeepers on my motorcycles and giving them the dead eye look.

Rick T.'s avatar

That’s why they make chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla!

S2kChris's avatar

My Wrangler is my every day car/daily driver. Aside from not being good on a twisty road (we have none in IL) and kind of crap long distances, it’s a fantastic Swiss Army knife. All weather capable, can haul and tow a decent amount, family friendly, has all the luxury stuff I need (remote start, heated seats and wheel, great stereo), great for city/in town driving, etc etc etc. Since I have a sports car for fun, and wife has a comfy CUV for road trips, it’s the perfect third leg in our little fleet.

Speed's avatar

there are cheaper ways to go 14 under the speed limit

Colin's avatar

Recently drove a 3 on the tree for the first time, I regret to inform you that I had to youtube it. Anyway, it was fun, in a novel sort of way. Early 60's FJ40.

jmcq747's avatar

I remember as a kid, my uncle had to watch me and take me for lunch after school, as my parents were away. He drove a Wrangler Sahara back then, the version with the square headlights. Doors off. What a feeling, I still remember it to this day, probably 33 years later...

Steve Ward's avatar

And that photo of the Recon is just stupid. If one is carrying bikes, presumably one is going to go for a ride. Are you going to leave the vehicle with the doors off, so critters or vagrants can have access to the inside? Or if the doors are storable in the back (maybe, but I doubt it) where do you then put the front bike wheels, and gear, and whatnot? In the back seat where it can fall out? Morons.

Nostrathomas's avatar

2011 Miata owner here. Would kill for a BRG on tan. Or Competition Yellow. Or 90s teal....

More real colors is the one thing every Miata owner has been clamouring for years now...but nope, it's one nice red, and then fifty shades of lame.

Morgan's avatar

What, not a fan of (checks notes) Baby Poop Green?

Steve Ward's avatar

This should be the baseline minimum set of colors for the Miata: https://www.dodge.com/news/high-impact-colors.html

SBO-very online guy's avatar

I was coming here to say that the Mustang even has a shockingly better color palette than the miata. molten magenta and Adriatic blue, sign me the fuck up!

KoR's avatar

Molten magenta looks FANTASTIC in person. Lovely, lovely color.

C'est un nom de plume's avatar

Adriatic blue has me very tempted

Jared's avatar

Indeed. I’m so damn torn about an Adriatic Blue GT Premium with Performance Pack and a 6MT… with a $59,230 sticker.

SBO-very online guy's avatar

Honestly, anything under 60-70k for a new, honest hand to God street performance car is a pretty good deal. That sounds like you call around for a dealer willing to sell at invoice and pull the trigger

Acd's avatar

Same with the interior. Would you prefer the black cloth interior or the other black interior in your new Miata?

Steve Ward's avatar

No. Just no. I looked at Miata’s online the other day. With 3 of the exterior colors you can get a tan interior, but not with the red exterior. Really? WTF?

Nplus1's avatar

That tan interior also seems to come with nicer leather.

Speed's avatar

sunkist orange or maybe a mariner blue (metallic?) would be neat

would only ever choose soul red metallic tho

Chairworthiness's avatar

Are they bringing the Zinc Green Metallic to America for 2027? The renderings on the website look bad but I remember some photos of them at dealers in Japan that looked good.

What looks fantastic is the Nissan's new Shinkai Green Pearl Metallic for the Z.

https://x.com/wataryrz_aria48/status/2096361660235792678

This is absolutely gorgeous. Only problem is the black roof means there's less of it to ogle. Why?

Wyatt LCB's avatar

OH YEAH that green is incredible

Steve Ward's avatar

there is a video on the Nissan site: https://www.nissanusa.com/vehicles/sports-cars/nissan-z.html

green with tan interior and stick shift would be perfect. now how to get my wife to let me buy a Japanese car??

Steve Ward's avatar

and I just went on the Nissan site, did a search for 2027 Z, green, tan interior, manual trans - there are NONE listed anywhere. There are manuals with black interiors, and tan interiors with auto trans. Grrrr.

Chairworthiness's avatar

I assume they're just getting started with the 2027 model run. They're probably on a boat right now...

Nostrathomas's avatar

Typically not a pearl paint guy, but that green is a beaut.

burgersandbeer's avatar

If ever there was a car that should come in a variety of colors, it's the miata.

Does anyone know the prediction market odds of AI wiping out the human race? I’m not interested enough to check.

Rick T.'s avatar

How would you collect if you’re right?

Ataraxis's avatar

I will believe all the AI people’s warnings if in the same posts they say they are also leaving the Democrat party and registering as Republicans since the threat to humanity from the Democrats is much greater than that from AI.

You’re welcome.

Steve Ward's avatar

The only thing saving us is that the Dems are mostly incompetent.

Ataraxis's avatar

And they’re neck and neck with their fellow Unipartians.

flightwriter's avatar

Dems are arguably in a much better position to rally their base and spread anger/discontent among the lower classes. Actual competence is overrated.

We need to ask: do we want the US government to merge with Anthropic and OpenAI and ban all other AI's?

They have totally lobotomized Claude, so I would say fuck no.

TM's avatar

I just did a Gemini prompt on what are the prediction market odds that AI wipes out the human race. It came back with .38% by 2100 on the low end and ~5%-13% by 2030 on the high end.

I have a neighbor who works as an engineer for Stelantis, I have seen the Recon, it looks very much like a jeep, just no tail pipe…

Terminator was a documentary…. Only half kidding.

I might drop my CDL so that I never have to visit dmv again, it didn’t use to be that bad, anymore it sucks in Michigan, and next year they want to do a pilot study on charging an additional 200 bucks for ten thousand miles, glad I am retired and can control how much I drive.

Wyatt LCB's avatar

The fees are high and that mileage tax would be heinous, but at least getting an appointment online and transferring titles/registering a newly purchased vehicle is easier than ever. I was 10min early to my appointment to transfer the Ram title, didn't register it at the moment but I was in and out before my actual appointment time of 5:10pm. Plus the local office is literally 5 minutes from my house and an easy stop on the way home from work. I honestly think the ONLY thing that's considerably better in my life thanks to COVID is the Michigan SoS processes.

It also came back with this.

Market Incentives & Biases

1. The "Payout Flaw": Real-money prediction markets rarely host high-volume "end of humanity" bets because if humanity goes extinct, there is no platform left to payout the winnings. This creates a structural bias toward "NO" bets or forces traders to treat short-term derivative questions as proxies.

2. Specialist vs. Crowd Variance: While general prediction markets hover under 5–15%, surveys of top machine learning researchers and AI safety figures often yield higher median estimates (commonly referred to as \bm{P(\text{doom})}) in the 5% to 20% range.

As for number one I wanted to say “Duh”. How do you get paid if it happens?

Sherman McCoy's avatar

I am happy to sell you, and anyone else, extinction insurance.

sightline's avatar

God, a friend of mine just got a 95 NA with that deep blue exterior and the tan interior. Put a wooden Nardi wheel it and it just looks so so good.

Always fun watching Lewis eat shit.

The Anthropic thing is even dumber than normal Silicon Valley idiocy, because if _anyone actually thought that_, they would be full on Linda-Hamilton-in-T2 mode. Everyone is going on about low probability / high impact scenarios, but if they really believed there was a TEN PERCENT chance of civilization ending, they should be doing NOTHING besides bombing the frontier labs. That they’re not shows how much bullshit they’re wading in.

Steve Ward's avatar

That's the second best color combo, after BRG / tan.
