With what I've been reading in the press/hearing on YouTube as to how things are going at Stellantis, I wouldn't be surprised if some people from Auburn Hills had a few MANPADS lined up at the end of the runway at Oakland County International when Tavares arrives.

Looking in from the outside and knowing only what a the dumb&dishonest press tells us, it almost makes one wonder if there is some sort of intentional sabotage of the company going on. An intentional tanking of the company's ability to make money.

After all. Isn't the charitable alternative believing that 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 in Stellantis management are truly 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 stupid?

As someone on this forum previously observed: the spiral of failure only leads upwards, the trick is finding the onramp.

But seriously, it seems that most public companies are mismanaged. From what I've seen, most upper management doesn't really understand what they're doing, and impostor syndrome never really enters their empty little heads -- they just know that if they go through these motions, and click these boxes on the spreadsheet, and do these things, then they will be "good at their job."

It's a cargo cult: whether it's lean management, scrum, DEI, six sigma, offshoring, just in time manufacturing, whatever... other companies participate in particular rituals and are successful, so if WE do the same rituals, we'll be successful.

Only a handful of CEOs actually *know* what they're doing and execute on it. Love him or hate him, Elon Musk is one of them. He has his fecal matter consolidated and it seems like whatever he does seems to be successful. SpaceX vs Boeing, ULA, and Blue Origin is the most obvious example.

The Ceramic was the other watch I considered when I bought my Omega Speedmaster Racing a year ago. I'm about ready for a new watch and would consider the Ceramic, but maybe it would be superfluous? Before I clicked on the Jazzmaster link, I assumed it would be a Hamilton.

Tudor has firmly replaced Rolex as the middle class aspiration sorta-luxury watch in my mind, and not just because I much prefer the look of the aluminum bezel BB GMT to the ceramic GMT-Master II. Aside from their ludicrous haute-horology aspirations with their increasingly unhinged prices, the AD games necessary to get one a la a Hermes purse or the like has completely put me off of them. It astounds me that a viable business model is one where you can walk into a store and not purchase anything that you try on, be told it will be months/years before they can get what you want, and to add insult to injury, they try and sell you on overpriced precious metal models as an incentive to jump the list. Rolex really is right at the top of the list of greatest marketing ever concocted, right along with Ferrari. Tudor's relative lack of history in the US, and its general international reputation as "Rolex cases with ETA movements" has allowed them to be a lot more interesting of a company in terms of taking risks with their products. Rolex's big innovation this year was taking an 18mm boat anchor, making it in gold and charging as much as a well equipped 3 series.

I just re-watched the Grand Tour ‘A Massive Hunt” and saw the Hamilton Pan Europe that James May was wearing on a NATO strap. That got me thinking about the Hamilton that I have collecting dust in the watch box. That said, I am in the middle of a consequential year with regards to birthdays and anniversaries, so I am in the middle of adding a few Rolex’s to the collection. Adding a datejust for the wife and another GMT for me unless I can get the AD to deliver a Daytona. I know how you feel about those who actually buy a Daytona instead of winning one through competition, but I don’t care, I want that watch. My Seiko Monster is a forever watch, along with a Tag 1887 that is special for personal reasons. The Milgauss and Pepsi are also heirlooms for the kids. I guess I buy more than I sell at this point. That Pan Europ is calling to me right now.

They're actually quite reasonable. I bought a Ball Railroad watch by Waltham in pretty nice shape for about $300. The gold plating on the case had worn away in a couple of small areas and there was one small hairline crack below the six on the dial (the face is porcelain) that became invisible after I had the watch cleaned and serviced, another $300 or so.

Ball was a Cleveland jeweler who managed to convince the railroad industry to use watches made to his standards. He never actually made his own watches but rather licensed companies like Waltham and Elgin to make them.

Outside of watch enthusiasts circles it's not generally known that it was American watch companies that pretty much perfected quality watchmaking, not the Swiss, and that companies like Rolex (which was founded in London, not Switzerland) followed the American method: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_system_of_watch_manufacturing

"reasonable" is very subjective . my /Breitling (SP ?) cost upwards of $350 so I only wear it when going out with my Sweet .

I have a 1930's Ingersoll wristwatch that the original owner told me he'd paid $3 for when new . I used it for decades before it halted, I wonder if it's even worth having cleaned and adjusted .

It's interesting that Waltham created the method of production watches . I used to live not far from the factory, it sits on a river, I'd guess (?) they used the water flow to run the machinery .

The last time I visited it was a very cool museum .

THANK YOU for the great link ! .
