The Trump victory in 2024 was easy to explain then, and it’s easy to explain the loss now —

He won a moderate (but very real!) victory on the back of the Biden/Harris fiasco and more importantly the cost of living issues presented in the immediate aftermath of COVID.

I doubt they would have retained the the house entirely if they avoided the war, but he and his circle of the stupid, evil, and stupidly evil managed to exacerbate the very conditions that allowed him to win in the first place with to such a degree that I think the GOP is essentially dead for the next few cycles here.

I’m not sure they had a choice, but it is the direct result of the GOP putting ALL of their eggs in the maga basket. All they were left with on the lower rungs were weird freaks and scumbags like Ken Paxton to run with. If Conryn gets the primary there, Texas might not turn blue. However, Paxton is what Trump wanted and so they had to do it.

More broadly, I feel safe saying people are fine with a strong rhetoric if they’re getting something out of it, but when all they see are their neighbors being killed and thrown into prison and the people on top openly scamming them, they will get upset. This is what happens when they get upset.

For what it’s worth, the leading Dems in Congress have largely been feckless morons so only time will tell what, if anything actually comes of it for the next two years. My guess is people like Hegseth and Todd Blanche likely get impeached if they don’t resign first. There needs to be a sacrifice here to sate the electorate that voted this way, after all, and I’m sure between the literal war crimes and rampant, open corruption the evidence won’t be too hard to find.

Scott's avatar

Here’s to hoping the Democrats overplay their hand, which is almost guaranteed. Neither the 2020’s Democrats nor 2024-26 Republicans could understand there are a lot of voters who need to pay rent and gas and if they can’t afford it they vote the other guy/lady. Coupled with Trump’s historic ability to be hated and this is no surprise.

Hopefully this is the death of maga-cult Trump

Worship and it’s control over the GOP. The elected right needs to stand for something actually conservative or it is going to die, and we will be Europe in no time without any right to restrain the left. Yeah, the so called “far-right”- those clowns used to be called national socialists so they aren’t of the right unless you were educated in the Ivy League in the last 15 years and will spend 50 more years paying for it.

If we get the purge of Trump and he isn’t hanging over 2028 playing kingmaker then there is a chance to fix things. Thankfully this should also be the end of JD Vance. 2 years of investigating Trump’s shady crypto schemes with middle eastern dictators should be interesting.

JasonS's avatar

I'm hoping they spend their time impeaching Trump while nothing really gets done.

The big issue losing the Senate though is more about losing the ability to get scotus in.

Chuck S's avatar

I will be surprised if they waste time impeaching Trump. there is absolutely nothing to be gained by it. I suspect they'll do two things:

1. Push through a lot of legislation designed to undo the damage Trump has caused and do something about inflation only to have Trump veto it all, making Vance look bad for '28.

2. Investigate all of the rampant corruption that has happened under Trump's watch, making Vance look bad for '28.

Ice Age's avatar

They will, and Vance will be on the ballot in '28.

Chuck S's avatar

Let's hope it is Vance in '28. It will be so easy to tar and feather him with Iran and all the failures of the Trump administration. Harris couldn't separate herself from Biden, Vance won't be able to separate himself from Trump.

Wyatt LCB's avatar

Pretty well right on.

I'm also seeing lots of my friends celebrating, making rather bold claims about what comes next, and generally being insufferable online about the results, that indeed I myself voted for too. All we did yesterday was vote. That doesn't automatically "fix," or change anything instantly. It doesn't undo what's already been done. And it certainly doesn't give us a moral high ground to belittle or dehumanize people who voted differently from us. Yeah, the people I voted for won and the proposals in Michigan ended up going the way I voted. I'm satisfied with that, but the reactions have made it impossible for me to be happy with it. I think the outcome of this midterm was obvious because of how badly the admin and Republicans were fucking dog over the last year. I also think the results don't automatically make America an empathetic paradise nor a woke socialist hellscape. I think the reactions from *everybody* online are far too exaggerated and there's no use in being belligerently excited or apoplectic over it.

Chuck S's avatar

I'd like to think that the wholesale repudiation of Trumpism and the fact so many Trump voters went blue this time around _might_ suggest that we can all begin to see we have more in common than those at the extremes want us to realize.

I keep saying this, but if the ACF crowd can come together over shared interests and disagree respectfully on things like politics while learning something from each other, I have think at least some segment of the population can do the same.

Wyatt LCB's avatar

That's a great point too, Chuck

Scott A's avatar

We have a shared enemy here!

Sherman!

Chuck S's avatar

Jason Kodat's avatar

I laughed waaaaaay harder at this than I should have.

Chuck S's avatar

It took longer than he or anyone else expected, but Lindsey Graham was right when he said, "“If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed … and we will deserve it.”

Trump has done what the Democrats could not - caused an almost wholesale realignment. The number of districts and states that went blue by the same margin or greater that they went for Trump can't be considered anything less than a wholesale repudiation of what the Republican Party has become. Republicans have no one but themselves to blame for this outcome, and Trump gets the lion's share of it - even if he will never admit that.

As to Hegseth, I'll bet Trump throws him under the bus before Massey can start impeachment proceedings. Trump has to know someone has to take the fall for Iran.

Colin's avatar

Too bad Charlie is dead.

ScottM's avatar

We conservatives are sick of the Cornyns and McConnells of the Uniparty doing nothing and demanding we reward them for it.

Friends and neighbors being killed and imprisoned? Like January 6ers? If you are talking about illegal immigrants being deported or, rarely, killed resisting arrest then i did vote for that.

Why does Hegseth drive you Democrats crazy? My Democrat friends and my Democrat father have this irrational hatred for Hegseth. When has the Secretary of War ever been so important that he's top of the list for impeachment or worse?

Joe's avatar

Agreed, many times the democrats do things that are bad for the country and they do it unopposed by a lazy republican congress and senate.

Chuck S's avatar

Regarding Cadillac F1:

"What’s it worth? Based on these results, it isn’t worth a dime more than the franchise fee. Let’s hope someone competent buys it, fires Andretti, moves GM out, and does something respectable."

The franchise fee is $450 million. How hard could it be for the ACF crowd to raise the money to run a season? Hell - I bet Brother Bark could sell his watches and get us halfway there! Jack as team principal, Brother Bark as CEO...

If nothing else, two Baruthian green cars on the grid would look badass and we could all get free watches as part owners of the team. Think of the parties! Think of the chaos we could cause in Monaco! Think of the verbal dissing we could all give Lewis!

Steve Ward's avatar

Put me in for $4.50.

Speed's avatar

"Think of the verbal dissing we could all give Lewis!"

im gonna call him a slur

Chuck S's avatar

that's not a slur. it's the truth. his behavior in Mexico was beyond the pale and unbecoming a seven-time champion.

Scott A's avatar

And he still got the luck at the end of the race! Luckiest guy who never stops complaining.

Chuck S's avatar

Exactly! Rather than be gracious at the end when Rosberg interviewed him - "Yes, I said a few things in the heat of the moment and Charles was just being a fierce competitor, but I caught a break and ultimately, the team had a good result" - he had to prattle on about some discussions needing to be held in private and so forth.

Has anyone ever been so successful in any endeavor and yet bitched so much about it?

Lynn W Gardner's avatar

It was a very tough lesson to learn but the GOP needed it. We can now expel all the bootlickers and grifters that strapped themselves to the party while sitting back and letting the train wreck of candidates in the Dem party have fun for two years. If anything I'm not worried. What will keep me up is if the GOP fail to learn its lesson and allows another idiot to run which will give the Dems unified control.

Ice Age's avatar
1hEdited

The GOP is incapable of correcting itself.

Remember, these guys are all businessmen and rent-seekers who got rich through COMPROMISE, not holding the line. That's why they always sell us out.

Wes's avatar

I disagree, they will and have in the past. Compromise is how you govern my brother, being a dick doesn't get you much or rather what happened last night.

Speed's avatar

doubt it

these are the same retards that mocked white guys not working in the vain attempt to cater to a vanishingly small black voter base. its insane how much they hate their own voters

Henry C.'s avatar

Quite the opposite. His base wanted him to be a dick. DOGE and ICE and fire and brimstone and lock her up and drained swamps as far as the eye could see.

Scott A's avatar

All he had to do was not go to war for israel.

Colin's avatar

It seems that "his base" is a rather small percentage of voters.

"This is why every one of Jimmy Page’s Zep remasters was worse than the previous one, by the way. By the time you’re fifty, your ears cannot be trusted."

A guy was interested in one of my harmonica microphones. It's an updated version of a dedicated harmonica mic called the Strnad that is long out of production. He wanted to know how the tone compared to the original. I told him that to my ears they are comparable but not identical, but that those ears are almost 72 years old and can't hear anything over 12Khz.

Speed's avatar

if anyone else is curious as to how high a frequency they can hear this might be of some use

https://onlinetonegenerator.com/frequency-sweep-generator.html

no idea how this can change based on what listening device youre using whether its earbuds or high end speakers or whatever

Ataraxis's avatar

All that matters is what frequencies your ears can pick up. Without my hearing aids, I can literally hear a pin drop, but I can’t hear women’s voices that are in the mid to high frequencies. I can’t hear soft spoken men, either.

linearphase's avatar

Same here, with a nasty loud tinnitus whistle at 8 kHz. But I can hear at frequencies above it. Soft music passages disappear in the din.

JasonS's avatar

Interestingly enough the people I personally knew who voted red in 2024 who voted blue this time around somehow think the reasons they voted against the Ds are magically fixed two years later. Both of these individuals voted against the Ds over vaccine mandates, cancel culture, and identity politics. The Ds have not changed.

The excuse is Trump had a mandate when we all know they didn't have 60 in the Senate to pass a damn thing. So voting D sticks it to Trump? Whatever I guess.

As far as the Iran war goes, while I don't like it, why has it taken more than 4 decades for a president to actually do something about it? Iran through proxy has disrupted the economy long enough, even putting aside the nukes. ( I firmly believe they had the material and ability to make one ).

People just always seem riled up when an R is president during a midterm. My state actually had over 35 percent turnout for a midterm/gubenetorial race. 2022 was barely 25.

Scott A's avatar

Ill never vote d but i did abstain for two reasons

1. Im in Illinois

2. The war in iran. It’s stupid

Scott A's avatar

I have not been getting it for years and never get the flu

Mike's avatar

My brother is they same way. After the great Covid vaccine debacle I have little trust left for public health administrators but I do trust my doctor and he doesn't even suggest a Covid booster but does recommend the flu vaccine.

Jason Kodat's avatar

The very first year I got a flu vaccine, my then-wife didn't. We both got the flu. I was a little uncomfortable for a few days and she was prostrate on the couch for a whole fucking week. She started getting the flu vaccine after that.

Last year, I got the flu, as did my unvaccinated girlfriend. I was uncomfortable for a few days and she was prostrate in bed for a week. She did not get one this year yet, so I doubt she is as smart as my second wife.

Jack Baruth's avatar

That sounds promising otherwise though.

Acd's avatar

I have never gotten a flu shot and don’t ever intend on getting one. Maybe if I did actually get the flu then I could use some personal days and vacation days instead of losing them at the end of the year like I do every year.

While I don't think the electoral situation is anything but bad for America, I am BESIDE MYSELF WITH GLEE that Conservative, Inc's Op-Ed guys are blackpilling, John 3:16ing and handwringing themselves into fits of apoplexy over this mess.

I hate those guys. HATE THEM. Every last one of them. Townhall, Lucianne, Red State, Hot Air, Bearing Arms and especially American Thinker, the whole sordid lot of "journalists" who're never angry but eternally sad & disappointed, who forever egg their readers on to...whatever...but never pick up a pitchfork to go storm the castle themselves, who describe the problems running our world into the ground with loving attention paid to all the gruesome particulars but are strangely silent as to a concrete course of action to resolve said problems, and above all who see themselves as voices crying in the wilderness, screaming from the mountaintops, "LET'S YOU AND HIM FIGHT!!!" They can't, you see, because they have kids and a mortgage and a brodozer payment and a sweet gig working from home without pants and can't afford to lose any of that. But us Nobodies out here in the Virtuous Red Middle? Yeah, that's OUR job to fix the problems THEY point out.

Who had me hooked into their doomloop for TWENTY YEARS thinking the world was a horrible place full of horrible people.

So they didn't have to work a 9-5.

Fuck those guys.

"There were people who were nostalgic about the old New York, or pretended to be. I knew some of them. “You might as well be in the suburbs!” they complained. The new, safe New York wasn’t “edgy” or “authentic” enough for them. Stores like the Gap were all over the place.

These critics were especially disgusted with Times Square: It had been “Disneyized,” they said. That was one of the great epithets of the day: “Disneyfication.” I heard it a thousand times.

Times Square was better, said the critics, when it was less square: when it was dominated by drug dealers, pimps, and whores. Cool, man. “Edgy.”"

If any of you wondered the outcome of the Idaho nominate a state gun "advisory question," I voted for the 1894 Winchester. Most of the state voted for the 1873 Winchester, because the ballot did not have a cool name for the '94, but the '73 is the "Gun that Won the West." Some people told me they voted for the "1873 Colt Single Action Army Revolver" because it was labeled as Peacemaker, and they thought that was the coolest option. (Which it certainly is compared to the boring and modern Colt M1911 it was next to on the ballot.)

I won’t mince words but it has always been the parties in control. Despise them both. Being the gatekeeper of who runs and only having the opportunity to vote for the party’s endorsed candidate stinks. Look at the options. Really? These were the best candidates for Ohio Governor? There were no better candidates?
