As I’ve previously mentioned about 77 times, I love the 1977-79 Pontiac Bonnevilles—especially the Broughams, naturally. Dad had one when I was three or four, and I deeply imprinted on it. But you don’t see them much any more.
I have seen a few at shows, including an incredibly nice Parisienne Brougham at the Pontiac Nationals when they were held here in the Quad Cities a few years ago and a couple in the wild, though the last one seen randomly parked was probably close to ten years ago.
But tonight I spied this one on Finding Future Classic Cars, an FB group I’m in, and I was immediately infatuated. I realize the light pastel green isn’t everyone’s taste, and it wouldn’t be too far off to call it hospital green, but I still love it.
It’s currently on offer in Spokane, WA for $8,200—seemingly a steal for the apparent condition. But maybe the current seller factored in the attractiveness of the color—or the lack thereof. However, your author would consider it a plus, not a negative, haha.
Per the ad: “All-right, I'm gonna sell it. 1979 Pontiac Bonneville 2 door coupe. When is the last time you saw one, besides this one? 136,000 miles with a wonderful little notebook of services and repairs from the previous owner to prove it.
“This car runs unbelievably well, touch the key, just touch it and she starts! Perfectly smooth idle, smooth shift, good brake feel and modulation, no leaks, (none) ZERO rust, tracks straight, not a rattle or squeak in the car!
“Windows and door locks work, great updated radio w/cd (Dean Martin CD included in the sale) Heater works, AC does not.... Finished in mint green over green velour showing little wear. Great carpeting, headliner sags just a bit, no dash cracks.
“Excellent paint, glass, chrome and stainless. Optional wire wheel like factory hubcaps. Tires are a bit marginal, a new set might be a good idea. The car’s previous owner was a bit of a car guy and installed dual glasspack mufflers, they look 3 feet long and just sound "bitchin"...they really do...the car has this neat rumble to it, not offensive mind you, kinda wooden boat Chris-Craft like...a good rumble.
“First $8,200 takes her home. Reasonable offers considered. Before ya ask, yeah, I'd drive it a couple thousand miles but, I am pretty darn adventurous and I do understand she's an old gal. I am confident in the car though.”
Good thing it’s far from me, ha ha! Though pal Jason Bagge could go check it out, it’s in his neighborhood! Then he could arrive in style if Spokane has any supper clubs…
All I want in this world is a brand-new version of this to drive to work every day.
Closest thing I can think of is... ES350 Ultra Luxury. Which doesn't have a tenth of the style, nor does it scream "I'm in control of my own life" like a Bonnie coupe. The RC coupe is old now and it doesn't have all the nice stuff.
$8200 is probably a good deal for this. It looks pretty original and not too worn out. You're going to want that air condition to work in Spokane but get it west of Cascades you'd only really need it a few days per year.
