As alluded to in my Mercedes 230SL post, I was on vacation for several days. This usually results in me going to the family cabin up near Galena, with excursions to antique stores, liquor stores and fine dining establishments in between novels read out on the deck.
There is a really nice antique mall in South Beloit, IL, that I’ve been visiting at least once a year since about 2015. It is rare that I don’t find at least one or two things to buy and cart home.
And saw this excellent‘68 Sedan de Ville on the way.
This year was no exception, as I found a 1/24 scale Danbury Mint 1956 Buick Roadmaster Riviera hardtop for only $45. It had one wheel broken off, but the wheel was still present, and I was easily able to fix it after stopping at the Beloit Walmart for some gel super glue.
After that I drove the ten or so mile jaunt north to Janesville, as there’s a cool consignment store right in the middle of downtown that I also like.
And while there, I found brochures on the ‘82 Bonneville Model G, ‘82 Chrysler New Yorker, and ‘60 Thunderbird. Total cost for all three: less than ten bucks.
Due to my roundabout traveling, I headed back a different way, and as I re-entered the City of Beloit, right on the Rock River, I passed a supper club. And I was stupid. Because after a brief stop in a nearby lot to check their menu online, I continued back to IL.
But a couple of miles later, I thought, “you moron” and made a U turn. And I’m glad I did, because the place was excellent. It was very ‘70s inside—a plus in your author’s book. And while it had Italian fare like lasagna, there were also traditional supper club items like lobster, filet mignon and prime rib (sadly, the latter is only available Saturday and I was there on a Tuesday).
I ordered the steak and shrimp, which consisted of an 8 oz. filet and three jumbo fried shrimp. And these were truly JUMBO, approximately 4 bites each. And it included the traditional supper club trappings of homemade rolls, a salad bar, and even soup. Everything was terrific. My only tiny caveat was I ordered the filet medium, and it was more medium well. But it was still so good I didn’t really mind.
And while you would expect me to order an Old Fashioned, because, supper club, because, Wisconsin, I stuck with a gin and tonic.
So, bottom line, food was great, service was great and the dining room was charming. I was expecting to see Frank Cannon pull up in his silver Continental Mark IV and order a house salad with bleu cheese dressing, extra large prime rib and twice baked potatoes, ha ha. And I was lucky as I got there just as they opened. While there were a couple of folks at the bar, I was the only person in the dining room for the first five minutes. But very quickly people started arriving, and the place was busy by the time I headed back to the Lincoln.
Recommended. Check it out if you ever happen to be in Beloit!
odd that canadian walleye is on there but ive never seen it on a menu here
anyway this is a great opportunity for everyone to argue over the ideal way to order a steak and why its medium rare
One of the things I miss about Wisconsin is the supper clubs!
