Me and Julio's Guide To Whether Or Not Your Protest Is Legitimate
"We is all on the cover of Newsweek."
Trigger warning: political discussion ahead, likely to annoy both traditional “liberal” and “conservative” readers. Tomorrow we are returning to the important topics — namely, liter-class Universal Japanese Motorcycles!
I had planned to spend today talking about my experience at AMA Vintage Mid-Ohio and my quixotic mission to acquire a “musclebike” from the Big Four Japanese manufacturers, but two things happened to derail this very sensible plan.
The first was that I had dinner with TTAC founder Robert Farago in Austin. Robert did very well with The Truth About Cars, because there’s a market for that. Then he did very well with The Truth About Guns, because there is really a market for that. Lastly, he belly-flopped with my recommendation that he do a Truth About Watches site, because nobody really wants to hear the truth about watches.
Anyway, he and I ended up sitting in his Audi S4 listening to that old paean-to-teen-prostitution, Paul Simon’s “Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard”.
Today, at lunch, I happened to meet a nice older lady who was heading over to the Statehouse to protest the placement of “pornographic” books in school libraries. “There are over 700 books,” she told me, “and some of them aren’t permitted anywhere but in schools.” Your humble author is fairly sure that is not correct, but we had a pleasant conversation nonetheless. I wished her luck, but I doubt she is going to get those books out of the schools. The early and aggressive sexualization of children is second only to “cheap labor” on the globally-homogenized wishlist.
