Click "LIKE" on my comment if you always thought Tom was 62 years old :)

Smithers! Another lime rickey!

The placement of the sentence "I was in third grade at the time" made it seem like you were in third grade in 1968, not 1988.

Tom Klockau's avatar

The 356 had '68 plates on it upon discovery in 1988.

In '68 my dad was still in high school, ha.

Klockau and AK47isthetool exist outside of this timeline. One where Gin and Tonics flow freely, Porsches are exclusively rear engined, Cadillacs have no known burgerkingring time, and school lunches are exclusively prime rib with a side of mashed potato.

Ha! Well, we're not always born in the decade we should have been... I should have flown Mustangs in 1944, married a pretty English girl, bought a 1967 Cougar brand new, spent my retirement going to fighter group reunions, and died before the mass cowardice and societal wreckage of covid... oh well.

Andy's avatar

I like you so much more than the curmudgeon who heads up this joint.

Slight niggle,

Because this is about Porsches, whose owners are, errr... insufferable, the 991's automatic box would be a PDK rather than a Tiptronic....

Other than that great article.

Tom Klockau's avatar

Whatever the current automanual term is. Sometimes my brain sticks in 1991...

Andy's avatar

Wait till you're my age.

Bryan's avatar

Except that’s a 997 his father bought, not a 991. If that’s whatchu talkin’ about, ha.

Andy's avatar

He said 2012, you're right that's a 997, but they had PDKs by then.

Bryan's avatar

Yeah I thought it was odd to call that a 2012. Oh well, I’m dedicating brain bandwidth to unimportant things. Carry on.

Great history, Tom.

Did I miss the pictures of the Volvo 1800S or are you holding out on us?

My German relative who brought our genes to the New World arrived in 1885; don’t know much about him. Your family story is fantastic.

I added a photo of the Ovlov at the bottom of the column. :)

Tom Klockau's avatar

Column on it on Hagerty--OK to mention that Jack? :)

Mom had bright red 73 1800ES sportwagon when I was a kid. Love those 1800s.

Lynn W Gardner's avatar

The important question is: is it OK with Hagerty that one of their highly paid scribes is covorting with Persona Nongrata Jack?

Tan interior >>>>>> etc >>>> black > gray

Jared Harris's avatar

As a man not yet thirty—that milestone trips next month—I am the only one of my in-real-life peers who agrees with this sentiment. The only way I’ll take black interior is if paired with walnut wood trim and a gold exterior. Otherwise, give me tan/beige or brown every time.

I would’ve never guessed you liked these cars in the least based on your love of big American cars. Super neat family history with cars from way back!

"TBH if we’re talking modern Japanese rolling stock I’d take the equivalent Honda over a Toyota any day,"

In 2021 I had to buy a new sedan to replace my 2014 Accord. I would have liked to have bought another Accord, but no. They were not making 6 cyl. Accords, and I would not spend that much money on a 4 cyl. car. No Way. I didn't really want to stump up the money for an Acura or a Lexus. I don't like German cars. So I was left with my choice of a Camry or an Avalon. I bought the Avalon. It is very nice, very smooth, and very comfortable. At my age it maybe the last car I ever buy. If so, je suis content.

Tom Klockau's avatar

I did like the final Avalons, a friend of mine has a black one.

Of course Toyota killed it off. :/

sgeffe's avatar

That’s what I said until I drove one! Hence the 2019 Touring in my avatar!

Sadly, Honda doesn’t give you a choice of a high-po engine anymore. I’m going to hang on to my 2019 until the next Accord comes along, and hope that the hybrid powertrain is somewhat more powerful than the base model engine.

That’s exactly what led me to buy my wife a V6 Camry.

Great story. Amazing family history. Thank you!

I didn’t know that a Klockau ancestor was an early pioneer in the car business, very cool!
