In Your Atmosphere
Be careful what you wish for (or suggest!)
Based on a reader suggestion this morning, I fired up the "Where The Light Is" DVD and read an online tutorial on the song, and here we go.
A couple notes:
This is not an easy song to play and sing at the same time. And when your hands are both normal-sized (compared to JM's bear paws) and filled with previously-broken bones, it's even tougher.
Tuning is a decidedly non-standard EBEF#BE.
I tried recording this with my trusty RainSong JM-1000, but the guitar was louder than my voice. Then I considered doing it on the Martin Alternative II. But the closest thing I have to John's actual performance guitars is my Martin D-41, so that's what I used. Construction is the same as the OMJM Signature --- Sitka top, Indian Rosewood sides, mahogany neck, ebony board with MOP inlays.
The "miniature horse" line is a tip of the proverbial fedora to an old flame of mine in Los Angeles who, for reasons best and perhaps solely understood by herself, bought a miniature horse a few years ago. There are two women I know whose homes seem to exist in a continual state of barely controlled chaos, and she's one of them.
Anyway, enjoy it. I certainly enjoyed playing it. Sometimes I wonder about the woman who meant so much to JM that he dedicated at least two songs (this and "Queen Of California") to her. It wasn't any of his famous paramours. It has to be someone who was more private, and more important, to him than JLH or Taylor or Jennifer or even Katy. My opinion that sorrow is a better creative motivator than joy is easily lent support by comparing this to "Who You Love", which is fucking terrible.
