Back In Black
The photo's misleading --- although I did take this lovely and eye-wateringly expensive AMG E63 biturbo wagon around Putnam Park on Saturday, the real story was with another car that I can't talk about just yet. It's been two and a half months since I was injured and I had some concerns about being able to drive on-track without 100% healing of my broken pelvis. Those concerns were unfounded; I logged more seat time than anyone else in my group, both driving and coaching, and although I've had pain for a lot of the day today it's not incapacitating.
In terms of lap time and how well I drove the cars, I'd say I am on my way back to where I want to be. I was fastest, in the sense that I got the most of out the car, when driving my Accord, which turned out to be much more enjoyable than I'd expected. Once I remembered to turn the "ECON" mode off, the big coupe reached 120mph on the front straight no sweat and allowed me to sneak in front of a few better-equipped cars:
The all-season tires and woefully undersized brakes cut the sessions short each time, however. I have to say that after 3,100 miles I am totally convinced that the Accord was the correct choice for me and for John, who calls it the "alien spaceship".
I'll have two more days on-track in California next month and then it's off to CMP for my first wheel-to-wheel race since last year. Cross your fingers for me, please!
