Someone taped hostage flyers to a lamppost with razor blades on the back, blades pointing up, and the dumb Neo-Nazis got their fingers sliced up pulling them down. It’s a start.

I lived in Ann Arbor during the last years of the Vietnam War. Many stop signs in town had "The War" stencil painted on them. I'd do the same with "Hamas" in Dearborn, but the police chief there is named Haddad and they'd probably indict me for felony vandalism of public property.

We never got that 'The Boys' review Jack mentioned.

MD Streeter's avatar

Here's a review: Garth Ennis HATES superheroes, wrote an awful comic dunking on them, and then it was turned into an even shittier TV show. Everyone's an irredeemable asshole. Thanks. I got the message.

Full disclosure: I love superhero comics. But I also love Preacher and Ennis' first couple Punisher runs. Go figure.

Ice Age's avatar

You just described the whole CONCEPT of ironic deconstruction.

Henry C.'s avatar

Yes, this. There has been enough capeshit for one lifetime. The black humor is refreshing. I could do without the current year character gender swaps and related changes. The showrunners are probably having an 'Archie Bunker' moment where, to their dismay, the 'villains' are well liked by the viewers.

David Florida's avatar

Hellblazer, too. Ennis' take in Preacher was not a surprise after seeing that.

Jack Baruth's avatar

Oh yeah! I should do that.

I wonder if the “throw it away” instead of fixing it mindset applies to our culture about the state of our country. It feels similar to folks who want to become expats or secede instead of doing something about the state of things. I admit to feeling this way sometimes.

That said, server racks won’t stubbornly resist, arrest you, or invent sexual assault allegations for trying to fix them.

Plane's avatar

We had a civil war once over the secession question. It cost hundreds of thousands of lives to answer. I hope we do not have to ask it again.

I don’t believe separation would really make life better for most Americans. People hate each other for reasons couched mostly in cultural reasons and identity politics and this is encouraged by the uniparty. The same elite class would likely continue to rule both sets of places so you would have two weaker and still declining countries with the same shitty anti-industrial economic policies except you can be trans and get abortions in one while you can open carry firearms in the other.

It would also require a complete sacrifice of American hegemonic power. (Reader’s interpretation if this is good or bad).

Your story about leaving computer support reminds me of a book about Silicon Valley start ups. A guy in the book said he would leave a start up when they started to buy cheap pens.

The best line from the book was another guy’s justification for leaving a start up that was cutting back on its generous stock option packages: “Why work for Stalin if you can’t get a fur coat?”

Jack Baruth's avatar

"A guy in the book said he would leave a start up when they started to buy cheap pens."

I can see the logic to that!

Ataraxis's avatar

I worked for a boutique securities operation that was a small subsidiary of a huge corporation, and we had a semi-monopoly that just printed money like mad. I distinctly remember being in the regional manager’s plush corner office with the great view, and he was bitching to his hot Puerto Rican secretary on how she was spending too much on pens! He actually did the per pen calculation! Needless to say, I did not get a fur coat.

I had an epiphany the other day: I don't actually hate computers. I don't even hate software. Despite my volume of commentary on the matter, I realized it was true.

No, what I hate is the relentess neophilia that infects the geeks, nerds & dorks who write software. I hate the drive for New even though the Existing works fine and isn't broken.

This revelation slapped me hard in the face this weekend as I was filling out some straggler paperwork on my new car (2020 Mustang GT 6-speed) and I had to sign a few PDFs the dealership sent me.

Google Docs gave me a couple of app options and long story short, I had yet another experience with computers that left me in a white-hot, this-close-to-destroying-everything-in-the-room-rage.

What the hell was so dysfuctional about Acrobat that it wasn't good enough anymore? Jack and Shit, that's what.

My point here is that the whole subject of computers may literally result in the extinction of mankind. The intellectual horsepower of our society goes into Computers because that's where the money is (well, there and Law), and in the not-a-zero-or-a-minus chance that we have to deal with an extinction-level bolide impact, we won't have the spaceships we need to do it.

Because we kicked Neil Armstrong off the hero pedastal and replaced him with Mark Zuckerberg.

In all seriousness, random UI changes for no purpose probably annoy technical IT people more than anybody else. We are the ones who end up having to retrain our coworker, friends, and worst of all parents. In an organization that doesn't produce software as a product that retraining has very real and sometimes huge costs. That hurts our bottom line and keeps IT staff from being able to do something that adds value to the business.

So why does it happen? In software as a product companies having your UI look "dated" can be a sales nightmare. And since visible changes there are often faster and easier (with less potential to actually break the product) than non-visible code fixes to actual broken parts of the software they are going to get approved and pushed. In my experience the UI folks also have a tendency to be more "artsy" and young. Folks who by their nature respond positively to visible change.

Eric L.'s avatar

But, see, I am a computer programmer and work with/"manage" a bunch of them. They _aren't_ dorks any more. The super-smart, socially maladjusted types who built the backbone of all the software powering our world today? They're gone. The new breed of programmer is a Scott Locklin-danger-hair social studies graduate who went to a Javascript coding bootcamp after realizing a full-time job at Starbucks won't pay back $200,000 in student loans. (This is pre-Covid, when you still had to pay back those pesky things)

Jack Baruth's avatar

"The new breed of programmer is a Scott Locklin-danger-hair social studies graduate who went to a Javascript coding bootcamp after realizing a full-time job at Starbucks won't pay back $200,000 in student loans."

Sir, are you trying to convince me that there is a meaningful percentage of white people in coding jobs?

Eric L.'s avatar

At woke companies, yes. You've dallied more in the huge, Indian IT department scene, which I try to avoid thinking about. That sort of developer would impact your Adobe Acrobat woes, but not so much your Facegoomazon experience, I wouldn't think.

Ice Age's avatar

Fine.

The real villain in that movie was the US government. If they'd dealt in good faith, none of the movie's events would've happened.

Wrongly imprisoned a man without trial for decades, conducted & then covered up illegal military operations, weaseled out of paying survivors' benefits, alienated a decorated war hero badly enough that he caused a terrorist incident and then tried to end the mess by shooting through dozens of hostages?

Ross McLaughlin's avatar

Agreed, I didn't think it was about COVID in any way at all - it was about as unsubtle of a climate change nod as I can imagine. That movie was absolutely awful though. The only silver linings were getting to look at Jennifer Lawrence and Cate Blanchett.

Mr Furious's avatar

I think it *was* intended as a climate change parable, I don’t think they could have released it in time for COVID otherwise. It just works for whatever the ignore/obsess science debate of the moment is.

Unless Fauci was working with the directors... 🤔

Jack Baruth's avatar

They didn't start filming until the end of 2020, when TRUST THE SCIENCE was in full swing. I agree that the genesis of the film was climate change. Either way, the central assumption holds; "climate science" is like being an economist in the sense that you can't really do much science.

I'm not agreeing with the way "science community" handled the pandemic, but mRNA and epidemiology research have been going on for decades and can hardly be called science-adjacent. Those factors are essential to gene theory and our continued understanding of the human body

Jack Baruth's avatar

"mRNA and epidemiology research have been going on for decades and can hardly be called science-adjacent."

I hear what you're saying, but compared to orbital math these things ARE science-adjacent. Ask yourself: would you rather bet your life on the 1801 orbital mechanics math or the truth of either field mentioned above?

A. Brooks's avatar

I see what you are saying but science or not isn't really a relative thing, its more about the process by which the information/field was derived. Just because you cant make an equation out of it doesn't make it not a science- it's not math sure

Jack Baruth's avatar

If you can't test a theory, it's not really science.

If your data doesn't pass a confidence test, it's not really science.

Climate science is woefully short on usable data and it has been shown more than once to be driven by politics and external factors.

Developing vaccines is closer to engineering than science, unless you can really test and determine the method. A lot of psychotropics are not really science because you're black-boxing the human body.

A. Brooks's avatar

mRNA and epidemiology theories can most certainly be tested

Robert Shelton's avatar

And, by the way, the government needs to abolish the student loan program for college education. Not "reform" it, abolish it. If you need to get a loan for college, demonstrate to your local bank that you've worked hard, behaved yourself, got good grades and high SATs in high school, and plan to major in a field where the odds are good that you'll make enough money to actually repay the loan.

It would be amazing how fast college costs would come down when there's no demand for Hamas-loving professors of worthless fields of study and the entire DEI staff is eliminated because students go to college to learn a marketable skill.

As a Gen Xer who graduated with ~$30k in student loans (1995), some of us were hosed too. When I graduated my market rate loans were at 12% and interest had started the day I took them out. Starting salary for an entry level IT worker in Seattle or Portland was in the $20k-$30k range at that time. Fortunately for me the .com boom happened a couple short years later and 10%-25% annual raises became a thing. That combined with roommates and driving 10+ year old cars until my mid-30s let me pay them all off in seven years.

Speed's avatar

Sounds like college would turn full STEM pretty quick.

Politics hardly matters when your entire field is shitcanned for being pointless. The DIE needs to leave, stat.

Ataraxis's avatar

The NC university system will no longer hand out “distinguished professorships” for non-STEM fields. The indoctrinators are up in arms, which is very satisfying.

JMcG's avatar

They’ll get their way. In a few years, someone will notice that Distinguished Professors are disproportionately White or Asian males and that will be the end of that.

JMcG's avatar

The first result of that would be to water down the hard sciences to ensure the correct mix of students graduates. It’s already happening. Group assignments, take home tests, etc.

Speed's avatar

The amount of leeway certain students get, especially in regards to writing, is mind blowing. I'm not sure you'd believe some of the stuff I've seen firsthand.

AK47isthetool's avatar

Are you attacking my ILP? I am reporting you to Admin!!!!

A. Brooks's avatar

The only thing that will do is make college even more selective for financial privilege. There are plenty of people who take on loans for STEM degrees and plan to do useful things with them.

I'm sure the reason is around is that it is actually profitable. Fed student loan interest rates were over 6% when the fed rate was under 1. People would often be better using a private lender

Jack Baruth's avatar

"The only thing that will do is make college even more selective for financial privilege."
